The line is Pittsburgh -3. Our number is Tampa Bay 20, Pittsburgh 19. Between those two positions sits a Buccaneers injury report that lists the quarterback as doubtful.
Baker Mayfield is Doubtful for Sunday at Raymond James Stadium. So is Antoine Winfield Jr., the safety who organizes everything behind Tampa Bay's front. That's the risk to our own position, stated plainly: we picked a home team to win outright and that team may not have its quarterback or its defensive quarterback.
We're not moving off it. The price is the reason. Tampa Bay +3, with the moneyline at +130 against Pittsburgh's -155 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 12), pays for a genuine split. The market has this as a Pittsburgh win in a low-scoring game; our projection has the same shape with the other winner. Getting three points on a team we think wins is the whole bet.
The supporting case is thinner than the price, and I'll say so. Tampa Bay is 1-4 with 100 points for and 112 against, a minus-12 differential. Pittsburgh is 3-2 at 111 and 109, plus-2. By the numbers, the Steelers should be favored by more, and if you're shopping this game on form alone you take Pittsburgh and don't think hard about it.
What the standings don't carry is Week 5, when Tampa Bay went to Dallas and won 24-16, and Pittsburgh beat Indianapolis 34-22 at home. Both teams arrive off a win. Pittsburgh's two losses both came on the road, 3-20 at New England and 24-27 at Cleveland, which matters for a club laying points away from home.
The matchup that decides this one is Tampa Bay's interior against Pittsburgh's protection. Vita Vea, Calijah Kancey, A'Shawn Robinson and Rakeem Nunez-Roches against a Steelers line built around Troy Fautanu, Mason McCormick and Zach Frazier. If that group can be moved, Tampa Bay controls down and distance and the under 40.5 has a floor under it. If it can't, Pittsburgh's edge group of T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig gets a long afternoon against Tristan Wirfs and Luke Goedeke, and the Buccaneers' offense never gets on the field long enough to matter.
There's a second thread worth watching. Pittsburgh's receiver room is down Ben Skowronek (Out), Roman Wilson (Out) and Michael Pittman Jr. (Injured Reserve), which leaves DK Metcalf and a group of names without much of a track record. Whoever takes the snaps for the Steelers will be throwing into a Tampa Bay secondary that is itself compromised: Winfield is Doubtful, Ayden Garnes and Benjamin Morrison are Questionable, and Zyon McCollum is the constant. Michael Pittman Jr. isn't the only absence, either. Derrick Harmon and DeShon Elliott are both on Injured Reserve, and Jalen Ramsey, Jamel Dean and Keeanu Benton are Questionable. That's a lot of defensive back help in pencil for a team favored on the road.
Our call stands: Pittsburgh Steelers 19, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20, with Tampa Bay +3 as the best bet and the total under 40.5. This is a game decided in the teens and low twenties, which is exactly why three points is worth having.
The one thing most likely to break it is the Buccaneers' quarterback situation. Tampa Bay's roster carries Easton Stick and Jalon Daniels at the position alongside Mayfield. If Mayfield can't go, we're asking a team with one win to beat a 3-2 opponent without the player the offense is designed around, and the three points stop being a cushion and start being the whole margin. We'd still take the price. We'd just understand what we're holding.
