Minnesota is 3-0 and the offense is a rumor.
Kyler Murray completed 15 of 29 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and he took three sacks for 16 yards of loss. His 66.5 rating is the number that should worry anyone in Minneapolis, because 23-16 at Tampa Bay is a scoreline the Vikings' defense bought, not one their quarterback earned.
The decisive play came with 1:54 left. Baker Mayfield's short pass to the right, intended for Kenny Gainwell, was intercepted by A. Van Ginkel at the TB 41, with Blake Cashman bracketed on the play. Mayfield was injured during it. Minnesota took over at the Tampa Bay 41 with 1:54 on the clock and all it produced was a Will Reichard 43-yard field goal at 0:33, good from A. DePaola's snap and Johnny Hekker's hold, which set the final at 23-16. A defense that hands you the ball at the 41 with 1:54 left should be handing you a blowout. The Vikings got a kick and needed the clock to rescue them.
That's the season so far. The linebacker room and the secondary are doing the winning. Eric Wilson finished with 10 tackles, 1.5 sacks, two tackles for loss and two quarterback hits. Blake Cashman had eight tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, a pass defensed and two quarterback hits. Joshua Metellus added nine tackles and half a sack, James Pierre had eight tackles, and Isaiah Rodgers intercepted a pass. That is the actual engine of a 3-0 team, and it is a fragile way to live.
The one Viking who looks like a real fantasy asset after this game is Jordan Addison: nine targets, five catches, 90 yards, a touchdown and a 41-yard long. Justin Jefferson got two targets and caught both for 32 yards. T.J. Hockenson got four targets and turned them into 11 yards. Addison is the receiver earning the looks in this offense, and I'm starting him with confidence until Jefferson's target count doubles. If you're buying Jefferson low off a two-target afternoon, you're betting on a different offense than the one Minnesota has been running through three weeks.
Aaron Jones Sr. is volume without explosiveness: 17 carries for 58 yards with a long of 14, plus five catches on six targets for 34 yards. DeeJay Dallas got one carry for two yards, Demond Claiborne three for one. Murray's two carries went for 17 yards and a long of 12, which is the most efficient thing the Minnesota passing game produced all night.
Tampa Bay is 0-3 and the picture is worse than the record. Mayfield is listed among the passing leaders and was hurt on the game's most important snap. Jalon Daniels appears among both the passing and rushing leaders and Bucky Irving among the rushers, but the published leader groups came with no statistics attached, so we don't know what any of them actually did. What we do know is that a team losing its quarterback on a fourth-quarter interception in its third straight loss has problems deeper than a 16-point output.
My read: Minnesota's 3-0 is borrowed against a defense that will not take the ball away every week. The first time the Vikings need Murray's 15-of-29 to win a game, he won't. Addison is the Viking pass catcher to roster, and I'll take the other side of anyone who tells you this was a complete team win.
