NFL Week 5 Odds and Picks: Packers vs. Bears, Texans
Week 5 lines are out from CBS Sports and SportsLine, and the two games they put at the top of the board are the ones actually worth arguing about: Packers vs. Bears, and whether the Texans win.
Green Bay at Chicago is the game where the number and the film don't agree. The Bears' box score is a quarterback room in open distress. Case Keenum went 11-of-19 for 108 yards, no touchdowns, one interception and a 25.9 QBR. Tyson Bagent was worse: 12-of-21 for 87 yards, two interceptions, a 21.8 QBR. That isn't a slow start, it's a passing game with no floor, and I'm not laying points with Chicago until one of those two strings together a clean half.
What the Bears do have is a run game and a target tree that's sorting itself out in public. D'Andre Swift turned 9 carries into 43 yards and scored on the ground, then added 4 catches on 5 targets. Roschon Johnson out-targeted everyone in the short area with 7 looks, catching 5 for 34. Luther Burden III caught 4 of 6 for 47. Rome Odunze got 9 targets and turned them into 3 catches for 40 yards plus a lost fumble. Colston Loveland saw 5 targets and caught 2. My read: Johnson and Burden are earning their volume, Odunze is being fed on reputation, and in PPR you chase the first two before the third.
Special teams is the one place Chicago looks genuinely dangerous. Zavion Thomas returned 6 kicks for 192 yards, a 32.0 average with a long of 61. In return-yardage formats he's a starter, and a return score would flip field position in a game where the Bears need every short field they can manufacture. Austin Booker got home for 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss. Devin Bush made 8 tackles.
The Houston question from CBS and SportsLine is literally "Will Texans win?" and my answer is yes. The failure mode I keep coming back to this week is the one that just gutted the Bears, turnovers in the passing game, and I'd rather be on the side that isn't asking a backup to survive four quarters. What would prove me wrong is Houston giving the ball away early and handing a manageable game to an opponent that suddenly only needs to run the ball.
Here's the league-level read. Week 5 is a quarterback slate, and the clubs without one are about to find out what their defense is really worth. Chicago's defense can hang. Booker and Bush showed that. No defense in this league survives an offense that can't throw on schedule, and once a coordinator knows that, the safeties creep and the run game that looked fine in September goes away.
Green Bay walks into a game where the opposing offense has already told you what it is. That's a spot I'll take every week, and it's the cleanest read on the board.
A note on how I'm treating the picks themselves: odds sheets are consensus, not truth, and the Packers-Bears line is the one I'd expect to move once the market digests which Chicago quarterback gets the reps. If the answer is Bagent, I want the under on everything Chicago throws.
My verdict, signed: I'm on Green Bay to handle the Bears and I'm taking Houston, and the bet I'd actually make is against any Chicago passing prop this week. If Keenum or Bagent puts together a clean game, I'll say so plainly. Until then the box score is the scouting report.
