A 1-1 start is a footnote for the Rams, not a crisis. That's a decade of Les Snead's work talking.
Yahoo Sports reports Los Angeles remains a Super Bowl contender after splitting its first two games, on the strength of a star-studded roster and its ceiling. That framing only holds up if you understand who assembled the roster and how.
Snead's philosophy since he took over as general manager in 2012 has been to treat draft picks as currency, not heirlooms. He traded up to No. 1 in 2016 for Jared Goff. He sent two first-rounders to Jacksonville for Jalen Ramsey in 2019. In 2021 he shipped Goff and two more firsts to Detroit for Matthew Stafford, then added Von Miller in November. Five months later the Rams won Super Bowl LVI. That is the case for the approach, and it is a strong one.
The case against arrived the very next season: 5-12, a roster with no draft capital to patch holes and no depth to absorb injuries. Snead's model trades margin for ceiling. Every year is a bet on the stars staying upright.
The stars are the argument now. Davante Adams, who spent eight seasons catching passes from Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, has called this 2026 Rams roster the most talented team he's been on, per Athlon Sports. PFF put Los Angeles at the top of its Week 1 power rankings alongside Seattle. The lone loss came to San Francisco in Melbourne, and the Rams have said travel had nothing to do with it. Fine. Then the problem is something else, and the next month will say which.
Here's the part worth watching: Snead has never had the option of a soft rebuild. He spent the picks. What's left is a top-heavy roster that has to win now, and with Stafford and Adams both on the wrong side of 30, "now" has an expiration date attached.
My verdict, signed: I'll take the ceiling. The 1-1 record says more about a September trip to Australia than about who these Rams are, and this roster can win in January. The risk is structural and real. If Stafford or Adams misses extended time, there's no draft-pick surplus waiting to absorb it. Snead signed that deal years ago and collected a ring for it. I'd take Los Angeles in the NFC West and expect them playing on the second weekend of the playoffs.
