Rams Target Week 4 for Puka Nacua, Who's Doubtful Against Denver
Los Angeles isn't waiting on Sunday night to plan for life without Puka Nacua. ESPN reports the Rams are targeting a Week 4 return for their No. 1 receiver, who is doubtful to play against the Broncos.
The designation itself is the news. Teams rarely publicize a target week for an injured starter unless the medical timeline has already firmed up, and "Week 4" is a concrete date, not a hope. Read it as the Rams telling you this is a short absence, not a lingering one.
Sean McVay's messaging stayed in that lane. He pointed to the depth behind Nacua rather than the hole in front of him. "There's a lot of guys I have confidence in to step up in his absence," McVay said. "It's a great challenge."
The most useful name in that group is Jordan Whittington, who missed last Monday's game with a quad injury and returns as Nacua's direct backup, an inside-outside receiver who can be moved around the formation the way Nacua is. Getting him back in the same week Nacua goes doubtful is the difference between a receiver room stretched thin and one that can run something close to the normal offense.
Nacua is an unlikely centerpiece for a franchise this dependent on one player. The Rams took him in the fifth round of the 2023 draft out of BYU, after he'd also played at Washington. Day-three picks are supposed to be depth, special teams, a roster filler who might earn a role in year three. Los Angeles instead built its passing game around one, which is why a doubtful designation in late September carries more weight here than it would in most buildings. There's no second receiver on this roster who commands that target share. Whittington and the rest are asked to approximate it.
One caution: "doubtful" and "targeting Week 4" are two different statements from two different sources, and the Rams haven't put a practice estimate on Nacua or defined what a full return looks like. A receiver's route tree is the last thing that comes back after most soft-tissue injuries.
My call: Nacua plays in Week 4. Naming the week publicly is the tell. Teams that expect a player to miss a month say "week to week" and move on. The Rams said Week 4, and that's a front office comfortable enough with the scan to put a date on the calendar.
