Sean McVay's injury report Friday wasn't a one-name story.
Puka Nacua is doubtful for the Rams' Sunday night trip to Denver, and McVay said several other starters are in the same holding pattern. That's the problem Los Angeles has to plan around: not a missing receiver, but a roster with multiple question marks and a game on the far side of the country.
Start with what "doubtful" actually means. In practice it's close to a formality, since the modern designation rarely produces a Sunday surprise. The operative phrase is the one attached to Nacua's status: expected back soon. Doubtful without a trip to injured reserve is the Rams telling you this is a week, maybe two, not a season.
Consider what Nacua is. A fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft out of BYU, by way of Washington, who became the center of an offense. Late-round receivers who turn into a No. 1 target are the exception in this league, not the rule, and that's why an L.A. injury report reads differently than most. The Rams didn't draft a receiver and hope. They built a passing game around the cheapest kind of roster luck, and now the bill for one week comes due.
What changes Sunday? Denver's ability to defend honestly. With Nacua available, a secondary has to tilt coverage his way and live with whatever that opens underneath. Without him, the Broncos can play the Rams straight, and the remaining pass catchers have to win against leverage and help they haven't seen much of. McVay's job this week shifts from calling plays for talent to manufacturing separation through formation and motion.
That Sean McVay addressed several starters in the same breath matters more than the Nacua line alone. A single absence is a game-plan tweak. A cluster of them is a depth test, and the Rams are taking it on the road in prime time against an AFC opponent.
My verdict: sit him. One September game is not worth the risk of turning a short absence into a long one, and "doubtful" with "back soon" attached is the Rams already signaling patience. If Nacua suits up in Denver, that's a decision the organization will regret more than a Sunday night spent without him.
