The Chiefs are 4-0 and suddenly thin exactly where they can least afford it.

Rashee Rice injured his right hamstring in the first quarter of Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders and was ruled doubtful to return after halftime, per ESPN. He did not come back.

That's only half of it. Tyquan Thornton, who caught five passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns before leaving, suffered what the AP described as a gruesome-looking leg injury. Two receivers, one afternoon, in Las Vegas.

Kansas City still won 30-27, and the box score shows how: Kenneth Walker III ran 22 times for 177 yards and two scores, one of them a 76-yarder, while Patrick Mahomes went 15-of-30 for 225 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. Thirty attempts for fifteen completions is a 50 percent day. That is not the offense as drawn up. That is the offense that shows up when the downfield options thin out and the run game has to carry the down-and-distance.

Xavier Worthy caught four for 70. Travis Kelce had two for 15. Noah Gray two for 17. Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen combined for zero receptions on three targets. Those last two names are the ones that matter if Rice misses time, because somebody has to absorb the snaps Rice was getting, and Worthy can only draw so much coverage.

One caution on the designation itself: "doubtful to return" is a game-day ruling, not a diagnosis. Hamstrings tell you the truth on Wednesday, not Sunday evening.

My read, and I'll own it: the Chiefs survive this week because Walker is running like a lead back and the defense closed out a three-point game. They won't survive many weeks of it. Kansas City's offense is built to throw, and Thornton's injury may be the more serious of the two. Until Rice's hamstring settles, Mahomes is throwing to Worthy and a tight-end room, and that's a ceiling on this team, not a footnote. Nobody in that building should be comfortable right now.
