Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton was carted off the field with a left leg injury in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 30-27 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, moments after hauling in a 55-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes.
The catch was the headline play of Thornton's afternoon, not the sum of it. He finished with five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets, more receiving yardage than any other Kansas City pass catcher. He was Mahomes' most productive target on a day when the quarterback completed 15 of 30 passes for 225 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, good for a 97.2 passer rating.
Kansas City didn't win this one through the air. Kenneth Walker III carried 22 times for 177 yards and two touchdowns, ripping off a 76-yard run, and the Chiefs needed all of it to hold off a three-point game.
Everything else about the win gets filed behind the image of a cart rolling out with the game still undecided. Thornton was in the middle of the most productive day any Chiefs receiver has posted this season, and now Kansas City waits on a diagnosis that will shape how the passing game looks from here. The scoreboard says the Chiefs got what they needed. The fourth quarter says they paid for it.
