Mike Lafleur said the word "out" and then spent the next thirty seconds walking it back. That reversal is the whole story. Budda Baker and Jedrick Wills are out of Wednesday's practice, not out of the game, and the Cardinals' coach made the distinction himself before anyone asked.
The designation is daily, and he said so twice
"They're out today, and then we'll re-evaluate for tomorrow." — Mike Lafleur
The tell is that Lafleur volunteered the clarification. Coaches who expect a multi-week absence use different vocabulary — "week to week," "a while," "we'll see where he's at next week." Lafleur used "day by day" and then re-upped it when a reporter tried to stretch the timeline to the rest of the week. For a 10th-year safety, a Wednesday DNP in late October is as often load management as injury.
Baker's underlying profile is the asset in question: 36 tackles, 1 interception and 3 pass deflections across five games, with 11-tackle games against Seattle in Week 2 and Detroit in Week 5. That is a tackle compiler in the highest-volume role in the secondary — the exact profile that gets over-drafted in IDP and exactly the one you do not sell on a Wednesday practice report. If you were planning to stream a replacement, wait for Thursday.
The replacement map is thinner than the depth chart looks
If Baker's status does degrade, the depth chart offers three names and only one of them has shown tackle volume. Dadrion Taylor-Demerson has 6 tackles in two games — all 6 of them in Week 5 against Detroit. Wydett Williams Jr. has 7 tackles across five games. Jerrick Reed II has no 2026 stat line in front of us. That is the shape of the drop-off: Baker's 11-tackle weeks do not get absorbed by one player, they get smeared across a rotation, which caps any single IDP add and hurts the Arizona defense's tackle floor in a way no market is pricing.
Wills is an offensive-line continuity question, and it routes to the tight ends
Lafleur bundled a starting-caliber tackle into a single sentence alongside a safety and moved on — no separate update, no severity, no mechanism. Read that as routine until the Thursday report says otherwise. The offensive-tackle room has bodies: Paris Johnson Jr., Elijah Wilkinson, Austin Deculus, Josh Fryar. What it does not have is a reason to believe the pass protection improves.
The actionable side of that is Jacoby Brissett. He has 1,110 passing yards, 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions, including a 292-yard, three-touchdown Week 5 and a three-interception Week 4. That is a quarterback whose volume is stable and whose efficiency is not. When a tackle is compromised, the ball comes out faster and the target distribution narrows toward the middle of the field — which is where Trey McBride already lives at 42 receptions, 308 yards and 3 touchdowns, and where Elijah Higgins has quietly built 8 receptions, 96 yards and a score, including 3 for 57 in Week 5.
Compare that to the outside: Michael Wilson at 29 receptions for 288 yards and Kendrick Bourne at 17 for 178. The receiving corps is not producing enough separation for a compromised pocket to survive on the perimeter. If you are adjusting anything off a Wills absence, it is tight-end target volume, not receiver props.
The illness line is the one with a longer tail
"got a little bit of an illness going around from a player, coaches, too." — Mike Lafleur
Coaches sick is the operative detail. A player-only illness is a single roster spot; a facility-wide one is environmental, and in-season that typically surfaces as Friday additions to the injury report rather than Wednesday ones. Lafleur also noted he is not putting anyone out there until they are at 100%, which is a stated policy of caution — the kind that produces late-week questionable tags and Sunday inactives you cannot see yet.
What to watch
The market offers nothing to trade here: Arizona sits at +25000 to win the Super Bowl at FanDuel, BetRivers and BetOnline, and +40000 at DraftKings. A 250-to-1 team's Wednesday practice report does not move that number, and anyone claiming it does is inventing a line. This is a fantasy and IDP story only.
Thursday's practice report resolves Baker. Friday's resolves the illness — count the new names, because that list, not this press conference, is where the Week 8 lineup damage actually lands.
