Courtland Sutton addressed the media during a press conference on September 9, 2026, following the announcement of team captains for the upcoming NFL season. The event provided Sutton an opportunity to discuss the significance of leadership and camaraderie within the Denver Broncos as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

Sutton: Or what does it mean to be named a captain for six six year now? Yeah, um shoes I you know, I told I'll tell y'all the same thing. I told the team, you know, um, there's a immense amount of gratitude that comes from being named captain to be able to have your peers and The guys that you share work with, you know, lock room practice film games bus rides plate flights The whole nine, you know, you share those moments with for them to you know Not just myself but the rest of the guys that were named captain to look at us and say, you know, we Trust that you guys are gonna help guide us in the right direction and we believe in you guys to you know Be the anchor for us, you know for the ship to be going into the direction we want to go towards and um, I just have a Lot of gratitude and thankfulness that I know same same but um that comes from being named captain for Another season.
Sutton: What's it say? Last year you guys had eight which is a lot this year. Yeah, I have nine Even added. Yeah, guys have that many players that the team feels like, you know should receive that.
Sutton: Yeah, um, I think you know something I told uh, I'll tell them the guys after you got done with the dinner Whether you have to see or don't have to see um, everyone has an opportunity to lead, you know Everyone leads in their own way, you know, you may not have to see on your chest, but we all have moments that our leadership shows and I think To to answer your question. I think that it speaks like it speaks volumes of What coach paten has done and what um, mr George has done in terms of bringing the right guys into the locker room because to be honest with you we could have you know 15 20 guys be captains, you know on this team because we have such I think there's such a a Standard that's been set amongst the locker room and amongst the guys to understand like what it takes to be able to have success And to have productive days at work whether it's at practice whether it's in the locker room in the weight room in the film room um I think we have that we have the right guys in those places and um It allows us to be able to have you know nine guys named captain and you know for dk to be A new member of that group. Um, I you know, I speak super highly of him and you know, I probably don't tell him this enough in person, but I tell all the all the other young guys, you know for to see him come in and and to watch his journey The way that has transpired and for him to never complain There was a one time when I think his his rookie year. He was on peace squad I never heard one complaint He just came to work got out there and did what he needed to do to be able to have success and then you know To watch him Grow and mold into the player that he's become and then ultimately into this leadership role into this captain role Um, man, it's it's truly inspiring, you know to be able to watch that happen and you know Guys that are undrafted guys that are drafted in late rounds guys They get put on peace squad early on should look at his story and Take that and run with it and say look if I keep my nose to the ground and keep working and keep developing myself The sky's the limit and um, you know I'm happy for him to be able to be in that in that ring and in that room with us.
Sutton: You probably have the most experience playing at arrowhead on this team What makes that building so difficult to play in and what is the biggest key to going in there?
Sutton: Yeah, um, they have Uh a passionate fan base They have a very passionate fan base and they come they they come they show out and they show up and they show out and and um you know, they They lean into what you know Makes them them, you know, they say they have the loudest stadium and it's a it's a good It's a good environment to be able to go play in it's um, it's a a loud environment. It's a it's a place where um You know, they love their team and their teams had success and so therefore they show up for their team and you know you just have to go out there and and and put your best foot forward and um, yeah, man, it's the divisional game I think that everyone's going to show up for divisional game and um It's on us just to go in there and you know execute one play at a time one quarter at a time and And you know see where the chips lie at the end.
Sutton: You say what we said happy game week kind of is that because it's Monday?
Sutton: Yeah, I mean it's it's what went what's that extra 30 hours Wait, especially in week one. Yeah, uh It's you know, honestly, it's at the end of the day It's exciting to be able to have the opportunity to open up the season monday night football All the games are going to be done college is done You know everyone's played sunday sunday night's done. The only game that's going to be on is cheese broncos And that's what's that's what's exciting. You know, yeah, we have an extra 30 hours as you would say, you know to you know, wait to be able to get that first game off, but um It's exciting though. It's exciting It's saying it's a privilege to be able to open up the season on monday night football You know, it's not they don't just hand it out to anybody I think that that says it speaks volumes to where our organization is getting back to and where you know people view the broncos and um, i'm looking forward to Watching the boys go out there us and the boys go out there and you know put on a show for everyone on monday night football.
Sutton: Or maybe it's 30 It's 30 extra hours before you get to eat. You don't care about that What do you mean?
Sutton: But I mean everybody you just said everybody else gets to play. Yeah, and you're still sitting on your Tush.
Sutton: I wouldn't say technically sitting on our tush. I mean as you know, we we we got to work today You know us having that extra day If you guys have been around coach payton long enough to know that the hay's not in the barn until until kickoff happens And um, he's gonna make sure we maximize each day that we get an opportunity to come out here and you know Get a head start on You know that that extra weekend. So we got we got a little head start last week And you know getting an extra day It's not technically not sitting down and waiting for it to happen It's you know, it honestly gives the extra day to prepare and you know, get out physically immensely get ready for the game.
Sutton: Of course you uh, you've obviously Seen how hard bows work to get back to this point. Yeah being as close as you are with him How eager are you to see him out there in monday night kind of the way things ended and now him being able to come back?
Sutton: Yeah shoes, um I'm excited I'm I'm a little you know, uh Nervous for everybody else just because you know, he's he's a competitor now and He you guys may not have got to see it because a lot of it was behind the scenes but um, you know seeing the way that things ended last year And understanding the type of player he is and in the competitor he is um, I was just excited to see him get out there and go throw the ball around a little bit in preseason, but to See where his mindset is already transitioning it into With our bonus day and then rolling into today and then knowing just how he is I'm looking forward to watching him go out there and shake on monday night because um he's like uh, he's like that like like a I don't know like a mountain lion that's that's in the zoo. There's just like pacing I like saw a mountain lion at the colorado zoo He was just pacing back and forth and I was like y'all don't want that way to get out It's not gonna be good But that's that that's what bow remind me of he just like Like mentally you could tell that he's just like i'm ready to go do this.
