The clean quarterback won. Michael Penix Jr. finished 25-of-34 for 213 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions, and the Falcons beat the 49ers 29-20 in Atlanta. Brock Purdy threw for 288 yards and two interceptions. The gap between those two lines is the entire game, and it's the tell on San Francisco's 6-1 start.
Here's the claim: that record assumes Purdy will be the best player on the field. He wasn't, and he didn't need to be bad for the 49ers to lose. Atlanta's defense didn't smother him. It waited him out. Purdy completed 27 passes for 288 yards and San Francisco scored 20 points. A lot of travel, very little arrival. Penix, by contrast, was never sacked. Zero sacks, zero sack yards lost, 6.3 yards per attempt, a 118.9 passer rating. That isn't a quarterback being hidden by his coordinator. It's a quarterback who knew where the ball was going before the snap.
Drake London carried the outside work: 10 targets, 7 receptions, 66 yards, one touchdown, a long of 21. The 10 targets matter more than the 66 yards. That's a passer with a fixed first read and the conviction to keep firing at it. Bijan Robinson got 20 carries and turned them into 63 yards at 3.2 a pop, a long of 12, no score. He was volume without push.
Nick Folk's 31-yard field goal with 1:56 left was the cushion. Then the finish, and it wasn't Purdy's arm that lost it: George Kittle caught a short pass to the Atlanta 19 for 22 yards, Jessie Bates III took it away, and Kendal Daniels recovered at the Atlanta 20 with 0:57 on the clock. Kittle still finished with 8 receptions for 88 yards on 10 targets, which is the quiet cruelty of the box score. He was the best skill player on the field and he's the reason San Francisco lost.
The number I keep circling is Kaelon Black's 12 carries. Christian McCaffrey got 7 and turned them into 39 yards and a touchdown, plus 6 receptions for 61 yards on 7 targets. Black went 12 for 63 with a 30-yard long and a score, and he lost a fumble. That's a split backfield with a rookie-sized caveat attached to it, not a changing of the guard. But 12 to 7 in a one-score game is a decision, not an accident. If you roster McCaffrey, your floor just got a second address. Black is worth a claim; don't spend real FAAB until the carries repeat.
For DFS, London at 10 targets and Kittle at 10 targets are both volume you pay for every week regardless of opponent. Penix is a two-quarterback-league streamer who just posted three touchdowns and zero sacks against a 6-1 team, and Jacob Cowing (3 for 38 on 5 targets) plus Jordan Watkins (3 for 56 on 6) suggest Purdy will keep spreading it thin underneath.
My verdict, signed: San Francisco's 6-1 is softer than the number looks, because the offense produces yards between the twenties and hands the ball away when the game tightens. Atlanta is 3-4 and just published the blueprint. Make Purdy beat you clean and he'll give you one. The Falcons won't win the division on this, but somebody in January will use this tape.
