49ers at Falcons Week 7: The Line Says Blowout, the Results Say Otherwise
The market has this one filed. San Francisco 49ers -4.5, total 50.5, Atlanta Falcons +185 on the moneyline, 49ers -225 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 19), for a 1 p.m. local kick at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. We're on the other side. Our projection is San Francisco 49ers 24, Atlanta Falcons 28, and the total goes over.
Start with the 6-0. San Francisco has 177 points for, 110 against, a differential of plus-67, and no losses. Read the six results and you find a team that wins the fourth quarter, not one that buries people. The Rams (27-7) and Dolphins (35-13) games were runaways. Arizona (36-30), at Seattle (32-29) and Washington (23-17) were not. Undefeated, yes. Also a team that has spent three weeks in one-score football.
Now Atlanta. The Falcons are 2-4 with 142 points for, 153 against, minus-11 on differential, and that record is uglier than the team. The Carolina game (3-34) is the one that broke. The other three losses were one-score games: 13-20 at Pittsburgh, 23-30 to Baltimore, 23-31 to Chicago. The offense has put up 35 at Green Bay and 45 at New Orleans. A 2-4 club that has been out of exactly one game all year is not a club that should be getting this price at home.
The matchup that decides it is Atlanta's backs against San Francisco's front seven. Bijan Robinson is the engine of the whole thing, and Brian Robinson Jr. carries a questionable tag alongside him. On the other side of the ball, Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams are both questionable up front, Garret Wallow is out, and Luke Gifford and Jaden Dugger are questionable. Fred Warner is on that roster and he fixes a lot, but one linebacker cannot cover for an edge group that may be thinned. If Atlanta can run on first and second down, the 49ers' offense stands on the sideline and the 4.5 starts working against the favorite.
The same injury logic cuts the other way, and this is where I'm honest about the risk. Deebo Samuel Sr. is out. Christian Kirk is on Injured Reserve. Mike Evans is questionable. What's left in that receiver room is Brandon Aiyuk, Brandin Cooks, George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey, and it's a concentrated group that San Francisco will throw to. Atlanta's corner room lists A.J. Terrell Jr. on Injured Reserve with Avieon Terrell, Billy Bowman Jr. and C.J. Henderson all questionable. That's the argument for the -4.5, and it's a good one.
The DFS read follows Deebo's absence, not the spread. Samuel out means Aiyuk and Cooks pick up the work that doesn't go to Kittle over the middle, and McCaffrey's receiving role grows. On the Atlanta side, the leverage is Robinson and Drake London at a price that assumes a comfortable San Francisco win. Kyle Pitts Sr. is the volatile piece. This isn't a week to stack the favorite; the Falcons playing at their own tempo is the contrarian construction.
So we stay where we were. Falcons +4.5, San Francisco 49ers 24, Atlanta Falcons 28, over 50.5, with the +185 moneyline live as a bonus rather than the point. The single thing most likely to break it is Atlanta's secondary. If the questionable corners can't go and San Francisco gets Aiyuk and Kittle against depth, the 49ers put together the kind of long, clock-killing drive that flips this number, and my read of the price is the thing that was wrong.
