Arizona's worst-case scenario landed Monday. Cardinals starting cornerback Will Johnson could miss the rest of the regular season with a neck injury suffered in Sunday's loss to Seattle, per ESPN, and the team's own framing was no sunnier: Arizona's LaFleur told reporters Johnson could be sidelined for the season.
Neck injuries are the cruelest kind for a cornerback. The position demands repeated backpedal, turn and collision, and there's no way to limit a corner's exposure the way a team can protect a lineman with a chip or a running back with a lighter workload. Either he plays the job or he doesn't play.
The Seahawks showed what the alternative looks like. Drew Lock completed 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba finished with nine catches, 155 yards and three scores. Some of that damage came before Johnson left the field. The rest is a preview of what the next fifteen weeks could look like without him.
Johnson arrived with real pedigree, a two-time All-American at Michigan, and Arizona drafted him to stabilize a spot the franchise has struggled to settle since Patrick Peterson's prime. Losing him for the year removes more than a starter. It removes what the defensive coordinator can call.
Replacement options are thin this deep into the calendar. Arizona will shuffle its depth chart, likely lean on a veteran free agent or a practice-squad promotion, and play more two-high safety looks to cover whichever corner steps in. That help costs something. Two-high shells surrender the run box and the underneath throws, and Seattle's Emanuel Wilson grinding out 92 yards on 21 carries is a hint that opponents will take what's given.
My call: the Cardinals cannot replace Johnson internally, and they know it. I expect a veteran cornerback signed within the week, and I expect Arizona's pass defense to look measurably softer on the back end until he arrives. This is the sort of injury that doesn't show up in a headline for long but quietly decides a season's direction. If Johnson is done, the Cardinals are a team playing for next year by November.
