Seahawks at Cardinals: Week 1 Says Arizona, the Price Says Seattle
Arizona scored 26 points last week. Seattle scored 13. Our published call sends the Seahawks out of Glendale with a win anyway.
That's the tension under the roof at State Farm Stadium on Sunday, and it's why this is the least comfortable number on the Week 2 card. Kickoff is 16:25 local.
Lay the facts down first, because they pull in opposite directions. The Cardinals went to Los Angeles and beat the Chargers 26-14, a road win over an AFC opponent, with a point differential of 12. The Seahawks stayed home and beat the New England Patriots 13-10, a one-score game decided by a defense that gave up 10 points and a differential of 3. Both clubs are 1-0. Only one of them spent Week 1 looking like it wanted a track meet.
The market shrugged at all of it. Seahawks -4.5, total 41.5, moneyline Arizona Cardinals +185 / Seattle Seahawks -225. Priced as though Week 1 happened to somebody else.
Worth pausing on the shape of this rivalry, since it's younger than most fans assume. Seattle only landed in the NFC West in 2002, when realignment carved the league into eight divisions of four and moved the Seahawks out of the AFC. The Cardinals sit at the other end of that timeline: the oldest continuously operating franchise in pro football, founded in Chicago in 1898, and a club that hasn't won a league championship since 1947. State Farm Stadium opened in 2006 and has hosted three Super Bowls. The Cardinals played in none of them.
None of that decides Sunday. What decides Sunday is whether Arizona's 26 points were a real offense or a one-week gift, and whether Seattle's 13 points were a real offense or the reason the total sits at 41.5.
Our read is the second one. The Seahawks won a game in which they scored 13 because they allowed 10, and a defense that holds an opponent to 10 travels well. Arizona's 26 came on the road, and that's the honest argument for the Cardinals at +185. But we aren't asking Seattle to score 30. We're asking the Seahawks to score more than a team our projection leaves at 18.
There's your case for the better roster at a number under five points. Road favorites inside their own division are the least comfortable wager on any Sunday, and the moneyline makes clear which side the books respect. Seattle -225 against Arizona +185 is not a coin flip dressed up as one.
Here's where I come down. I'm on Seattle at -4.5 and on the under at 41.5, with the projection reading Seahawks 23, Cardinals 18. The better team is priced like the better team, and a 13-point Week 1 doesn't frighten me when the defense holding the other side to 10 is the reason for it. The Cardinals' 26 from a week ago is the number working against us, and I'll live with that.
The one thing that breaks this: if Arizona's Week 1 offense is the genuine article rather than a September outlier, Seattle has to win a scoring contest, and 13 points won't do it. That's the risk on our own position, stated plainly. I'll still take the Seahawks, and I'll take them laying the points.
