Quarterback is the only position in fantasy where the waiver wire can beat your draft. Week 3 is when the receipts start arriving. Here is what the start/sit board looks like, and why most of it is a trap.
Kellen Moore has handed Tyler Shough nine red zone pass attempts in two games — a total that took Shough a month to accumulate as a rookie. That is real trust, and it puts him right on the top-12 line against the Raiders. But nine red zone passes is the entire argument, and red zone volume is the most volatile stat in fantasy. You are not buying a quarterback. You are buying touchdown variance in your favor, and you should know the difference before you click start.
Joe Burrow's Houston line reads like a two-man offense: Higgins and Chase combined for 19 of his 31 targets, both touchdowns, and 170 of his 207 passing yards. He is a fringe top-10 play, and yes, you are still starting him on the divisional trip to Pittsburgh. Here is the structural problem. When 19 of 31 targets go to two receivers, his floor stops belonging to him. It belongs to whatever the coverage decides to surrender, and that is a thin thing to build a lineup around.
Baker Mayfield has failed to throw multiple touchdown passes in eight of his past 10 games, and Minnesota attacks from everywhere. The recommendation is bench him if you have the luxury. This is not a matchup take. Eight of 10 is a profile, not a slump, and the Vikings are simply the next team positioned to expose it.
Kyler Murray practiced in a limited capacity last week and draws a pass-funnel Bucs defense missing its best running back. On paper that is a green light. It is not enough to start him, and the reason is the phrase "too many moving pieces" — that is the language of a medical guess, not a fantasy decision. Limited practice plus an unsettled workload means you are projecting two unknowns at once and calling it analysis.
Bo Nix has eight rushing yards this season and is 8-of-22 for 74 yards with an interception under pressure. A hungry Rams defense is the wrong place to find out more, so sit him. The pressure line is the part that should worry Denver past Week 3, though. Eight-of-22 under pressure is not a bad afternoon. It is the offense telling you where it breaks.
Matthew Stafford threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns against the Giants. Denver just held Trevor Lawrence to 189 yards and a pick, and this one lands on a short week in a Sunday night slog. The case for sitting him is legitimate. The trap is ceiling-chasing — the Giants game is the outlier until Denver proves otherwise, and a Sunday night slog is not where outliers get repeated.
Malik Willis is 29-of-50 passing with nine sacks against eight rush attempts, and Kansas City pressures on 63.2% of its blitzes. There is no version of this week to gamble on, and that call is correct. The sack-to-rush-attempt ratio is the whole story. A quarterback who cannot escape pressure is not a matchup play. He is a turnover waiting to be scheduled.
Bryce Young is on pace for more than 5,500 passing yards, and Cleveland has allowed at least four runs of 10-plus yards in every week. He is not a starter yet, and that is the right call. A 5,500-yard pace this early is usually volume math rather than efficiency, and against a Browns defense that keeps surrendering chunk runs, Carolina may not have to throw enough for the pace to matter.
The pattern runs through all eight: stream the quarterbacks with a narrow, repeatable path, and bench the ones whose value depends on something you cannot see yet. Shough has the path. Murray has the mystery. Start the path, sit the mystery, and stop treating last week's box score as next week's projection.
