Cincinnati is 2-0, and the wins belong to the defense. Joe Burrow's line reads tidy: 20 of 31 for 207 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, a 105.2 rating. It also came with five sacks for minus-25 yards, 6.7 yards per attempt, a 53.5 QBR, and one rushing attempt for minus-one yard. That's a quarterback managing a game against an opponent that never made him pay for it. The Bengals won 20-6 because Houston scored six points, not because the offense found a second gear.
Houston's six points are the story of the afternoon, and the Texans are 0-2 because of them. C.J. Stroud is listed among the team's leaders in both passing and rushing, and Kai Kroeger appears in the passing group alongside him. Jaylin Noel and David Montgomery are the listed rushing leaders. Houston's final meaningful possession ended with Stroud sacked at the Cincinnati 38 for minus-19 yards with 19 seconds left. Down 14 and in range for a cosmetic field goal, the Texans lost 19 yards on one snap.
Cincinnati's defense was the difference, and the tackle sheet says where. Demetrius Knight Jr. finished with 12 tackles, four solo, plus a quarterback hit. Dax Hill had 10 tackles and four passes defensed. Jordan Battle added eight tackles and a breakup, and DJ Turner II chipped in two more breakups. Four passes defensed from one safety is a coverage plan holding up.
The Bengals' offense is a different conversation. Chase Brown carried 20 times for 80 yards, 4.0 per carry, with a long of 11, and caught three of five targets for two yards. Samaje Perine got two carries. Burrow's production concentrated in two receivers: Ja'Marr Chase caught seven of nine targets for 75 yards and two touchdowns with a long of 32, and Tee Higgins caught five of 10 for 95 yards with a long of 23. Chase's 10.7 yards per catch is volume. Higgins' 19.0 average is the only chunk gain in the passing game. Twenty points is what that profile produces.
Then there's the sequence that closed it. With 2:16 left, Rehkow punted 27 yards to the Houston 12 and Jaylin Noel fair caught it. Houston needed two scores, drove 50 yards to the Cincinnati 38, and lost 19 on that sack.
My verdict: the Bengals are 2-0 on the back of a defense that held an opposing offense to six points, and that part is bankable. The offense isn't. At 6.7 yards per attempt with five sacks allowed and a run game averaging 4.0 with no explosive plays, Cincinnati will lose the games its defense can't win alone. Houston has the worse problem, and the final possession is the proof. Nineteen seconds, opponent's 38, minus-19.
