To'oTo'o was a starter in the middle of DeMeco Ryans' defense, and that is where this hurts. The replacement plan is thin. Jake Hansen is the most experienced linebacker left in the room. Jake Hummel is week-to-week with a groin injury. Behind them sit rookies Wade Woodaz and Aiden Fisher, which means Houston may hand a starter's coverage responsibilities to a first-year player. That is how a defense gives up chunk plays to tight ends, and this defense was built to make teams earn everything.
Injured reserve costs at least four games, roughly a quarter of the season, though To'oTo'o can return later in the year once he's designated. Houston has been adding names to that list all month, and each one chips away at the depth the front office spent the offseason building.
Here is my read: the Texans survive this if Hummel's groin settles within a week or two. If it doesn't, Ryans is starting a rookie at linebacker in a division that will hunt that matchup immediately. I'd bet on at least one busted coverage costing Houston a game before October, and I'd bet the Texans bring in veteran help at the position rather than let two rookies learn on the job in September.
