DeMeco Ryans used four words for David Montgomery and none of them was "day-to-day." Still evaluating. Growing injury. May miss some time. For an eighth-year back whose workload had already skidded — 11, 24, 33 and 10 rushing yards across his last four games — that's not a maintenance tag. That's a backfield that has been quietly reassigned while the fantasy default still treats Montgomery as the lead.
"Growing" is directional. Coaches don't use it for a bruise.
"He has a growing injury, may miss some time." — Ryans
"Growing" means the wrong direction. "May miss some time" is the softest phrasing a head coach reaches for when he's avoiding the word weeks, and it's telling that Ryans handled the other injury in the same breath with the identical hedge — Pitre's shoulder is "how significant that injury may be." No practice designation. No timeline. No "we'll see Friday." When a coach skips the entire day-to-day vocabulary, the return window is longer than the initial reporting will suggest. Plan for the designation, not the quote.
The concrete implication is Woody Marks: 149 rush yds, 2 rush TD, 11 rec, 54 rec yds on the season. Montgomery: 138 rush yds, 2 rush TD, 7 rec, 67 rec yds. Marks already sits above him in rushing yards and level with him in rushing scores.
The run-game praise was aimed at the rookie, not the veteran.
"I thought our run game was really well today." — Ryans
Houston threw for a win in Week 5 in a game where Montgomery ran for 11 yards. Marks ran for 62. When a head coach praises the run game in a game the veteran barely touched, the credit is going to the rookie and the line — not to the guy whose role is shrinking. Montgomery's receiving line (7 rec, 67 yds) is the only thing keeping his touch count respectable, and a back who can't run between the tackles is the easiest player on the roster to sit for a week and call it precautionary.
There is nothing behind them — which is the actual fantasy signal.
British Brooks has 0 rush yds in each of his last three games. Dare Ogunbowale has 0 rush yds in each of his last two. This is not a committee waiting to absorb carries; it's an empty room. So the Montgomery vacancy does not split three ways — it consolidates on Marks. That's the read most managers are missing: the question isn't who takes the third-down work, it's how heavy the early-down load gets for a second-year back with 149 rush yds on the season. A workload spike is priced differently than a timeshare, and anyone holding a Marks share priced off a rotational role is holding the wrong ticket.
Pitre's shoulder is the quieter IDP tell.
"Still looking at his shoulder... how significant that injury may be." — Ryans
Same hedge, same absence of a timeline, and it lands on a safety with 24 tackles and 5 PD, including 9 in Week 4. Behind him sits Calen Bullock (21 tackles, 2 PD, with 8 and 7 in the two games before Week 5) and — more importantly — Reed Blankenship, who has 40 tackles, 1 INT and 3 PD and posted 8, 11 and 9 tackles across his last three games. Ryans went out of his way on Blankenship:
"Reed is feeling more comfortable with what we're asking to do in coverage." — Ryans
That's a coach flagging an expanded role for a veteran safety in a week he's also crediting him for tackling. If Pitre misses, Blankenship's tackle volume doesn't require a snap-share projection to stay intact — it's the same box role, one man deeper on the depth chart.
Market note. DraftKings has Houston at +1.5, and the Super Bowl pricing is unusually wide across books — DraftKings at +1700 against BetOnline at +2200. A one-game spread inside a field goal plus a divergent futures board means the market hasn't settled on what this team is yet, which is exactly the environment where a backfield reshuffle gets mispriced for a week.
Watch the first practice report, not the presser. If Montgomery isn't listed as a limited participant, the "may miss some time" becomes "will," and the Marks workload is the trade to make before the designation drops.
