CLEVELAND — The Browns ran the ball 23 times for 44 yards Sunday. That's 1.9 a carry, and it's the reason their 23-19 win over Tampa Bay is less convincing than the final score.
This was Deshaun Watson dragging an offense that couldn't run the ball anywhere, and the box score says so plainly. Watson finished 24-of-30 for 238 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions, 7.9 per attempt and a 121.9 passer rating. He was also Cleveland's leading rusher: seven carries, 22 yards. Take the quarterback out of the ground game and it's 16 carries for 22 yards, 1.4 a pop.
Quinshon Judkins got 12 carries and turned them into 21 yards, 1.8 each, long of nine. Raheim Sanders added two for four. Jaleel McLaughlin one for three. KC Concepcion lost six on his only attempt. That is not a running game. That's a placeholder.
Start with the passer rating, though, because it overstates the night. Watson's 121.9 rating against a 70.4 QBR is a 51-point spread, and the gap is the tell. Rating rewards the 24 completions and the zero picks; QBR prices in the two sacks for 15 yards and the fact that most of the damage was underneath. Good quarterback play. Not the immaculate line the rating implies.
He spread it out, at least. Denzel Boston caught five for 95 and a touchdown, including a 55-yarder, at 19.0 a grab on seven targets. Harold Fannin Jr. caught five of six for 54. Concepcion caught six for 28 and averaged 4.7, which is a lot of targets for very little. Judkins caught all five of his targets for 27. Jerry Jeudy was targeted once and caught nothing.
The play that decided it was a one-catch night. Blake Whiteheart, two targets, one reception, 17 yards, touchdown at 3:51 of the fourth, with A. Szmyt's extra point good. That's the game-winner from a tight end who barely appears in the passing game otherwise.
Tampa Bay answered with a drive that ended the way most late drives against a secondary playing off do: Baker Mayfield incomplete deep middle to E. Egbuka at 0:22. End game at 0:00. The Buccaneers are 0-2 and their final offensive snap was a low-percentage throw to a receiver working the middle of the field.
Cleveland's defense did enough. Carson Schwesinger posted 10 tackles, five solo, with a tackle for loss. Quincy Williams had six and a tackle for loss. Grant Delpit had five solo stops and a sack. That's a linebacking and safety group cleaning up behind a front that wasn't winning on its own, which tracks with a game decided by four points.
My read: the Browns are 1-1 on a formula that has a short shelf life. Watson at 7.9 per attempt with a 121.9 rating is a ceiling game, not a baseline, and no offense survives 1.9 yards per carry from its backs across a season. Cleveland won this one because Watson was nearly perfect against the throws Tampa gave him. Ask him to be nearly perfect again in October and the math gets ugly fast.
Tampa's problem is worse. At 0-2, the Buccaneers let a quarterback with no run support carve them up at 7.9 a clip and still only lost by four, which means they were one clean throw away from stealing it. They didn't make it. That's the season so far.
