Transcript

Roberts: Just from team means, you know, obviously, coaching the court, the very detailed structure, you know, he knows who he wants, he wants what he wants. So, you know, it's like I said, I got here kind of late in the game, you know what I'm saying? So I've kind of just been focusing on getting myself, you know, saying, preparing and stuff like that. But just what I see from a team perspective, very structured, very detailed and stuff like that. I'm comfortable here with the coordinator and maybe telling the other guys what to expect. I'm talking about PG. Yeah. I'm very comfortable with PG. I know his expectations, what he expects out of players, how he kind of goes about, you know, step by step of getting the defense ready throughout the week and whatnot and such and such. So, you know, when guys ask me, you know, I kind of be like, nah, you know, that's how he is and, you know, but if you do this, you can grab, you know, whatever question they be and stuff like that. So, yeah.

Reporter: You've probably gone to Buffalo about a billion times in your career. Is it going to be weird to see a new place over there with the new stadium?

Roberts: Oh, they did go to the new stadium. Oh, yeah, that'll be a little weird. It's going to be a little weird, but I didn't do that so much. I'm still used to driving in on them back roads, you know. Well, you're probably still going to be doing that. So, yeah, yeah, yeah. I didn't really even think about it though.

Reporter: You told a story on the TV broadcast, which I was unaware about. You caught a touchdown pass from Brady.

Roberts: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we need to score. I said, you want to score, put me in. Nah, he threw me the ball. It really was a bad pass. Had to go back shoulder. I took it to the house.

Reporter: Were you like feeling full back?

Roberts: Yeah, that year, man. We had some great full backs out of James Devon. I think he was dealing with an injury that year and whatnot. And then Yakim Johnson was on our second string. He got hurt and whatnot. And yeah, it's just all hands on deck, man. You remember how far it was? 5'40", so 5'40". Whatever it was going to be, it's going to be a touchdown.

Reporter: You said back shoulder.

Roberts: Yeah, back shoulder. Yeah, man. I know they talk about Tom a lot, but hey, I feel like I made him look good that time.

Reporter: I guess this is your second time with Patrick Graham. What stands out to you about him?

Roberts: Man, just his voice. His voice, his command of the defense, how he still puts players in position to be the best player to their being. And when you one of them elite players, he tries to go and he'll study that one player and see like, oh, they get better at this, man, they can really take it to the next level. And he knows that that's even going to be even more of a thing for the defense. And opposing teams only looking at you for this. And you start hitting them with that, now they all off balance. And that's just, like I said, man, I'm always saying he's just a erniac and defensive minded. He's always thinking all and stuff like that. You know, he hasn't changed one bit. I enjoy being around him and stuff like that. I'm excited for the upcoming season.

Reporter: Letting energy, chippiness, have jumped up since you put on beautiful. You take pride in being that guy to be up in that stuff?

Roberts: Absolutely. And I'm not pulling off.

Reporter: Eric, I know we're not here all training camp and during Joey's kind of contract situation, but you've dealt with contracts before and you've known Joey for a little bit. Is there any advice or what do you tell him during this whole situation?

Roberts: Honestly, I just kind of stay out of it. I wish him nothing but the best. I hope he is exactly what he's valued at. Me and Joey have a great relationship owning off the field and we're not, but me, my personal, I've always been when teams and players is in negotiation, I kind of just stay out of it and just look at that player and be like, man, I hope you get exactly what you value for him.

Reporter: How do you guys keep up from being a distraction from the team when something like that is going?

Roberts: Well, Joey's a good player. Joey's a good person on and off the field. You see him, man, he's not even, he, him, himself, not even a distraction. You know, we do day-to-day business and stuff like that and obviously we know when it's time to wrap it up, Joey will be there.

Reporter: Do you give young guys any advice when it's, you know, bubble game like this and you're coming down to the end here?

Roberts: If they ask, if they ask, man, I always just tell them, man, go out there, take your one play at a time, you know, and whatnot. You know, me, myself, I hope to be playing because I still need to get some things ironed out and whatnot, but, you know, I've never went into a season and I know it's kind of naive of me. You know, a lot of people say, oh, that's naive, but I've never went into a season, even my 10 years ever feeling like, huh, like I've always been like, you know, oh, but then get no call. And then, you know, I just go to work the next day, you know, and stuff like that because I think it's just, it's for myself. It keeps me prepared. It keeps me never feeling comfortable.
