Carrying four quarterbacks is a notable choice. The third and fourth signal-callers rarely dress on game day, and each one takes a roster spot from a player who might actually contribute on special teams or as rotational depth. The common calculus says that's a luxury you cannot afford on a 53-man roster.
McCarthy disagrees. His quote draws a line between the two veterans who can win now and the two young guys who represent the future. He's not asking anyone to choose. He's saying the Steelers can develop the next quarterback while still competing with the current one.
That is a statement with real costs attached. Four quarterbacks means four salary-cap hits, four playbooks, four film sessions. It also means a thinner roster somewhere else.
