The elimination of alternates is the detail that matters. No more replacement players retroactively claiming Pro Bowl status. If your name is on the 2026 list, it's because you were voted in, not because several guys ahead of you pulled out. That's a severe upgrade to the brand.
Nostalgia will resist the move. People will talk about the olden days when All-Stars played a real game. That tradition ended years ago. The game had become a running joke and a ratings drag. The NFL just decided the joke wasn't worth telling anymore.
