Mike Macdonald didn't name a starting quarterback. He named a practice.
Sam Darnold is set to return to practice Wednesday, and Macdonald said there's a chance he plays this week at Washington. Yahoo's reporting points to Darnold missing at most one more game. The obvious read: Seattle gets its starter back just in time for a road trip.
I'd pump the brakes. Not on Darnold's health. On the urgency.
Drew Lock's line in the ESPN box score: 19-of-26, 235 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions, a 139.1 passer rating. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine of eleven targets for 155 yards and three scores, one of them an 82-yarder. Emanuel Wilson ran 21 times for 92 yards. That isn't an offense treading water until the starter returns. That's a functioning unit with a backup under center.
Which changes what Macdonald's non-answer actually means. He offered a chance to practice and a chance to play in the same breath. Those are different things. A quarterback easing back into Wednesday work isn't automatically the guy taking snaps on the road five days later.
The other thing Macdonald has to weigh: Jadarian Price lost a fumble on 13 carries, and Rashid Shaheed put the ball on the ground too. Turnovers travel poorly. They cost you road games no matter who's throwing.
So Seattle starts Darnold if he's genuinely ready. It does not start him because the depth chart says he's the starter. Macdonald has the luxury of that distinction this week, and he should use it. The gap between Darnold and a quarterback who just posted 139.1 is narrower right now than the headline implies, and Seattle's schedule doesn't demand a rushed decision.
Washington gets a Seahawks team with a real choice to make. Two weeks ago, they wouldn't have had one.
Verdict: Darnold practices Wednesday and starts at Washington, but if his reps are limited, Macdonald shouldn't hesitate to ride Lock another week. I'd rather be right about the process than fast about the name.
