NFL Roundup: Darnold, Lock, and Williams Face Injury Updates on Key Teams

Wednesday's practice reports landed across the league like a group text nobody wanted. Five teams, five different flavors of bad news, and only some of it is Week 2 noise.

Start in Seattle, where the loudest item lives. Sam Darnold has a glute injury, and the Seahawks will ride with Drew Lock until he returns. Leonard Williams offered the locker-room line: "We all have faith" in Drew Lock.

Faith is what you say when the alternative is saying nothing. Lock has the arm and he has the experience, and he has never once convinced a coaching staff to stop looking past him. Seattle's best path is to shrink the playbook, run the ball and let that defense win ugly games. I don't think it wins many. A glute injury on a quarterback is a mechanics problem, not a toughness problem, and those linger longer than teams like to admit.

Chicago's report is a split decision. DeAndre Swift was limited in practice. Darnell Wright did not participate at all.

Swift's Wednesday limitation is the kind of line that shows up on 40 reports a week and means nothing by Sunday. Wright's full absence is the one that should worry the building. Midweek non-participation from a starter usually signals the team is managing something real rather than resting a body, and the Bears can't afford to be figuring that out on a short week.

Washington held two players out of Wednesday's practice ahead of Dallas: tight end Chig Okonkwo and linebacker Frankie Luvu. For a defense preparing for the Cowboys, Luvu's absence is the heavier one. A tight end who misses a Wednesday loses the day when the passing game gets installed, which is its own quiet cost. I expect both back by Friday. If either isn't, Dallas turns into a genuine problem for Washington.

In Pittsburgh, Joey Porter Jr. was listed as limited at Wednesday's practice due to conditioning, and head coach Mike McCarthy said the plan was for Porter to do more than he did last week. That is a coach publicly raising the bar on a cornerback in September, and he isn't hiding it. Conditioning listings this early are the staff's way of saying the offseason work wasn't where it needed to be. Porter's snap count is a weekly decision right now, not a fixed number. Watch Friday's report, not the depth chart.

New Orleans has the least glamorous injury and possibly the most irritating one. Long snapper Zach Wood has a Grade 2 calf strain and will miss time. There is no fantasy angle here and I won't invent one. What there is: a specialist who touches the ball on every punt and every field goal, and a team that now has to find someone who can snap it back 15 yards at game speed. Kickers notice. Punters notice. A Grade 2 strain is a multi-week problem, and the Saints will be auditioning bodies this week.

My verdict: Lock gets Seattle one win before Darnold is back, and nobody should plan on more. Wright's Friday status is Chicago's real story, and Washington's injury report is the one I'll open first on Friday afternoon.
