Michigan beat Western Michigan 13-12 on a last-second Hail Mary, and the argument over whether the play should have counted is going to outlive the highlight.

The finish itself was absurd. WMU had the upset in hand, then Michigan caught a tipped desperation pass as time expired. The celebration started. The outrage started even faster.

Because the play probably shouldn't have happened. NBC Sports called it an "all-time replay blunder." J.J. Watt questioned the extra second that let Michigan run the play at all. Fans on social media went further, accusing the refs of rigging it. That charge is unproven and almost certainly wrong, but it tells you how badly this one was botched.

Dabo Swinney got dragged into it too, after celebrating with Michigan fans who stormed the field. Storming the field to beat Western Michigan? For a program coming off a national title, that's a self-own. CFB Twitter said as much.

The Barstool drama was even more on-brand. Brandon Walker, who covers college football for Barstool, lit into Dave Portnoy for celebrating the win like it was clean. Portnoy's gig is being the loudest Michigan fan in the room, so of course he leaned in. Walker, to his credit, called it what it was: a lucky escape that the sport's most entitled fanbase is pretending is a triumph.

Patrick Mahomes had a three-word reaction. We don't know what he said, and we don't need to. Everyone in football knew the feeling.

Here's the real issue: replay had a chance to correct this and didn't. That's not a conspiracy, just incompetence. But when fans see a money program get bailed out by a clock error, they scream rigged. College football did this to itself.

The Wolverines are 1-0 and they should buy lottery tickets. Western Michigan lost the biggest win in program history because somebody in the booth forgot how to count. That's the sport in 2026. The wrong team celebrated, and the wrong team is taking the heat. Michigan owes WMU an apology, but they'll never give one.
