Week 3 Intel: Keep the Giants' Underneath Target, Sell the Deep One
Two games is a sample. Three weeks is a pattern. That tension runs through the Week 3 intel: Patrick Mahomes through two games, the Giants without Jaxson Dart, and two backfields, Tampa and Carolina, that are finally sorting themselves out.
Start with the easy one. Dart is out, and the reflex is to dump every Giants pass catcher. I'd push back on that, at least on part of it. A quarterback change usually hurts the downfield receiver and helps the guy who lines up closest to the quarterback: the slot, the tight end, the receiving back. Short, safe throws are how a new starter survives a game, and those throws have to go somewhere. If you roster a Giants receiver whose value came from contested deep balls, that's the one to move. The underneath option is the hold or the add, because his targets are the ones the offense can't take away.
Mahomes is the other live question, and the buzz framing matters less than the usage. Two games tells you what a coordinator wants to do. It doesn't tell you what defenses will allow for the rest of the season. I'm not moving off him, and I'm not buying a dip that probably doesn't exist.
Tampa and Carolina are where I'd spend actual FAAB. When a depth chart firms up in Week 3, the back who owns the early-down work usually keeps it, because coaches hate re-litigating a job they believe they settled. The committee back is the trap. He's cheap for a reason. His role is the one that shrinks when the other guy gets healthy or earns trust, and you'll be holding him through the exact weeks you need him.
So here's the call. Hold Mahomes. Buy the Giants' underneath target rather than selling the whole receiving room. Spend on whichever Tampa and Carolina back has already separated, and fade the ones still splitting snaps.
What changes my mind: if Dart returns and the Giants immediately go back to throwing deep, the pass-catcher read flips and I'll say so. Until then, the injury is a target redistribution, not a reason to sell the entire room.
