Kansas City got one series out of Mansoor Delane, and it was the best kind of tease.
The Chiefs' first-round rookie cornerback intercepted Bo Nix on his first NFL series Monday night. Then he left the game with a shoulder injury. He had been listed as questionable to return before Kansas City ruled him out, and Pro Football Talk reports he will have an MRI on the shoulder, with the injury believed to be short-term.
That interception was the only one in Nix's line: 17 of 28 for 131 yards, a 4.7 average per attempt, one touchdown, a 69.2 passer rating, and four sacks. Denver never found a downfield rhythm, and the rookie helped set that tone before he was gone.
A shoulder is a lousy place for a cornerback to be hurt. It's the joint that does the work at the line of scrimmage, in press, on the jam, and it's the one that absorbs the impact when a 190-pound defensive back has to bring down a running back in the open field. Delane can run and cover with a bad shoulder. He cannot reliably play the position with one. That distinction matters more for a rookie learning NFL physicality than for a veteran who already knows the tricks.
Kansas City spent a first-round pick on Delane for a reason: to play, now, not later. Losing even a few weeks of that developmental runway costs the Chiefs something they can't get back, because the reps he misses in September are the ones that make him useful in December.
The MRI is the whole story here. A clean result and this is a footnote on a promising debut. Anything else and Andy Reid's secondary plan changes on the fly, with a rookie who was supposed to be part of it standing on the sideline.
My read: even if the scan comes back clean, the Chiefs should sit Delane until the shoulder is genuinely stable. A first-round corner's rookie season is a long investment, and there is no September game worth risking it for.
