Jalen Coker just posted the best receiving day of any Panthers wideout, and the word the broadcast kept circling back to was trust — as in Bryce Young's. Trust is the leading indicator of target share, and target share is what makes a receiver startable. But before you slot Coker into a WR2 hole, price the offense he plays in.
The trust tell
The analyst on the call put it plainly: "the level of trust that's being developed with Coker." On a broadcast, that phrase does specific work. It isn't a compliment about hands — it's a description of route participation. Coker was running double moves, out routes, and tight-window throws over Cam Lewis. That's a full route tree, and it survives a bad game script.
What wasn't said matters too: nobody framed him as a situational or rotational piece. He was in on the plays that mattered.
The concrete read: Coker's 2025 line was 11 games, 33 catches, 394 yards, 3 touchdowns. That's a 51-catch pace over 17 games — WR5 pricing. If the trust holds, he's looking at 6-8 targets a game, and in full PPR that's a usable FLEX floor even without a score.
Two touchdowns off double moves — don't chase them
"This is the second time that Carolina has got to Chicago on one of these double moves," the analyst noted. That's scheme, not variance. Beating a corner like Tyreek Stevenson on a double move requires the quarterback to hold the safety and layer the throw, and Young did it twice. He said it was "in the bucket" on the second one.
The trap is obvious: two touchdowns will spike Coker's waiver price and his name value all week. Chase the target count that produced them, not the scores. Double-move touchdowns are not a weekly engine; 6-8 targets are.
The ceiling nobody is pricing
"Bryce Young did have his fifth year option exercised," the broadcast noted. Good news for Coker's rest-of-season and dynasty value — the quarterback who trusts him is locked in past this year.
The bad news is who that quarterback is. Young's 2025 line — 304 of 478, 3,011 yards, 23 touchdowns, 11 interceptions — works out to roughly 188 passing yards per game. That's a bottom-third passing offense, and there's a hard cap on how much volume is available. Tetairoa McMillan (70 catches, 1,014 yards, 7 touchdowns) already claimed the alpha share.
So the honest projection: Coker is competing for the No. 2 role, not the No. 1. That's a FLEX with upside, not a WR2. Anyone treating a two-touchdown day as a promotion past McMillan is misreading the pecking order — and the broadcast gave you the tell, calling Coker "a very sure-handed receiver" while the volume conversation stayed about Young's anticipation, not Coker's ascension.
The competition is beatable
"There's Coker who's at the best day of any Carolina receiver," the analyst said. Read the implicit half: McMillan did not have that day, and neither did anyone else.
That matters because Coker's path to the No. 2 job is not scary. Xavier Legette has 363 yards and 3 touchdowns on 35 catches — flat production two years running from a former first-rounder. John Metchie III managed 18 yards last season. Rookie Chris Brazzell II, a 2026 third-rounder, is the only real threat with draft capital behind him.
Hold the job and Coker is startable in 12-team leagues. He does not need to beat McMillan to matter.
