Packers pull Kevin Zeitler out of retirement on one-year deal
Kevin Zeitler is coming out of retirement to sign a one-year contract with the Green Bay Packers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. The veteran guard is a Wisconsin native and a former Wisconsin Badger.
Fantasy managers should file this under noise. Guards don't post targets, carries, or anything else that lands in a box score, and no running back's weekly projection flips on an interior line signing in late September. Anyone pitching this as a bump for Green Bay's backfield or quarterback is inventing the math.
The actual read is roster. Teams don't un-retire a guard in late September unless they have doubts about what's already in the room. Zeitler is a known quantity, and a known quantity is what you buy when you've stopped trusting the unknown. He takes snaps from whoever was holding the job, and that player's role is now conditional at best.
Green Bay gets a homecoming and a stabilizer in a single signing, which is tidy work by the front office. It's also a patch. You don't lure a retired veteran back to Wisconsin midseason unless the internal option at guard wasn't good enough, and that's the honest headline here, not the homecoming.
My call: this is a floor move, not a ceiling move. The Packers just told everyone what they think of their in-house interior line.
