Seahawks safety Nick Emmanwori is listed as questionable for the 2026 regular-season opener on Sept. 8 against the New England Patriots, per ProFootballTalk. The designation comes after the second-year defensive back was limited in Sunday's practice with an ankle injury.
That limited session is the only practice rep he managed before the short week began. With a season opener now days away, the Seahawks may not know until game day whether Emmanwori can play. A questionable tag usually means pregame warmups will be the final test.
If he can't suit up, Seattle's secondary loses a physical presence in the middle of the field. That matters against a Patriots coaching staff that will game-plan for whatever lineup the Seahawks show. Emmanwori's coverage range is the kind of asset that can be hard to replace on a week's notice, but the Seahawks have depth assembled under defensive-minded head coach Mike Macdonald — a coach who just last season led this franchise to a Super Bowl LX championship.
The timing is awkward, though. An ankle injury in the first week is one thing; an ankle injury that limits you on Sunday before a Wednesday opener is another. The short turnaround leaves little time for swelling to subside or for the training staff to get him back to full speed.
The Seahawks are entering the 2026 season as defending champions, a status that puts a target on their chest every week. In openers, teams often want their best 11 on the field to set the tone. If Emmanwori is limited, Macdonald may start him anyway, but one bad cut in coverage could turn a manageable injury into a multi-week problem.
What's the smarter call? Sit him for Week 1 if there's any doubt. A September home game doesn't mean as much as keeping a starting safety healthy for the 17-game marathon. The Seahawks' season is not defined by the opener; their defensive ceiling is defined by having Emmanwori available in January. If he's truly a coin flip, the responsible move is to let the ankle heal and trust the next man up for one week.
