De'Von Achane limped off on Miami's first drive against the Chiefs and was ruled questionable to return with a knee injury. That's the entire report. It's also enough to define the Dolphins' afternoon, because Miami's offense is built on speed at the skill positions, which means it's built on a handful of bodies that historically haven't held up. Durability was the scouting knock on Achane coming out of Texas A&M, and the knock has been right too often since. Here's where I stand: if this is anything beyond a sprain, sit him for multiple weeks. Miami already knows from the Tagovailoa concussions how fast a season can turn on one hit. Rolling out replacement-level backs for a month is a bad problem. A compromised Achane in November is a lost season.
The Giants are casting a wide net at quarterback after Jaxson Dart's injury and hope to add one, possibly two, as early as Monday. They planned to get through the Titans game with Jameis Winston starting and Jake Haener behind him, and Jimmy Garoppolo is among the names in the rumor pile. New York has run a quarterback carousel since Eli Manning's iron-man era ended, and there's a clean precedent for what comes next. In 2004 the Giants signed Kurt Warner to hold the job while a rookie named Eli Manning grew into it, and that worked out fine. Garoppolo is the same archetype: a quarterback who has started a Super Bowl, LIV with the 49ers, and who won't destabilize a locker room. My call is to sign one veteran, Garoppolo if his medicals are clean, and stop there. Adding two quarterbacks turns the room into an open tryout, and Winston already supplies more variance than any coaching staff wants.
The Colts' "Anvil Strike" and the Bills' "Nickel City" gray alternates led the Week 3 uniform slate. Alternate uniforms have traveled a long way from the 1994 throwback celebration and the 2015 launch of Color Rush, back when a special jersey was an event instead of a Tuesday. Now the league runs a full merchandising calendar, and gray is the safest, least distinctive choice available. Nickel City earns its name, since Buffalo has carried that nickname for generations. Anvil Strike tells me nothing about Indianapolis, and that's the failure. A uniform should be recognizable from the upper deck with the sound off.
My verdict: Miami is the only team in this roundup with something real at stake, and the Giants should treat their quarterback room like an emergency rather than a bake-off. The jerseys are already sold.
