That's the part worth examining. Second-round picks are drafted to play, but not usually to start by September. When a rookie linebacker is the answer in Week 3, the question was about the depth chart. "Fill big shoes" means a job opened ahead of him. ESPN doesn't say why, and the reason matters less than the timeline: two games of evidence, then a starting role.
What Jacas starting does not guarantee is a full snap load. Starting linebackers in modern defenses are often base-package players who leave the field in obvious passing situations. Watch the third downs. If Jacas comes off, the Patriots are managing him. If he stays on, they've made a real commitment, not a stopgap one.
The matchup with Jacksonville is a clean test of a rookie's eyes. Play-action, misdirection, backs releasing into the flat. Two weeks of impact plays is a sample size of two weeks. Treating it as proof would be a mistake in either direction.
My read: this is a bet on traits, and given the state of New England's roster, it's the correct bet. Jacas will start, he'll flash, and he'll also get caught out of position at least once against the Jaguars. The question worth tracking isn't whether he's ready now. It's whether the Patriots are back in the linebacker market in April, because a second-round pick forced into a Week 3 starting job says as much about the room around him as it does about him.
