Vrabel spent most of his Wednesday availability on Jacksonville's front, Drake Maye's decision-making and the kicking game. The two sentences that actually move snap counts came near the end: Dre'Mont Jones and Quintayvious Hutchins won't practice, Craig Woodson won't either, and Dell Pettus landed on IR. That's three defensive bodies unavailable and one roster spot filled in the same breath — a rotation reshuffle the season-long number (+1600 FanDuel, +1600 DraftKings to win the Super Bowl) will never price, but IDP and deep-league managers have to.
Dre'Mont Jones: the depth chart says there is no Plan B
"I do not think Dre'Mont will do much today," Vrabel said.
The hedge that followed — "we will see where he is later on in the week" — is standard Wednesday language. The real tell is structural: New England's depth chart lists exactly one defensive end. Jones, and then nothing but defensive tackles. There is no second edge body to absorb a week of missed practice, which means "won't do much today" is not an injury note, it's a personnel problem.
Jones's production is already thin. Through two games he has one sack and three tackles — 1 sack and 2 tackles in the Seattle loss, then 0 sacks and 1 tackle in the Pittsburgh win. That's a declining snap-to-production ratio on a player the staff is now publicly managing.
The beneficiaries are interior linemen playing out of position. Elijah Ponder logged 5 tackles and a sack in Week 2 — 7 tackles and 1 sack on the season. Joshua Farmer added a sack and 2 tackles against Pittsburgh. Christian Barmore has 1 sack, 2 tackles and a forced fumble, including a sack in Week 2. Milton Williams (4 tackles) and Cory Durden (4 tackles) have combined for zero sacks across two games each. If Jones sits, Ponder is the name whose tackle floor jumps, because he's the only front-seven piece besides Barmore actually getting home.
Pettus to IR matters because Woodson is in the same sentence
"I think Dell [Pettus] went on IR this morning," Vrabel said.
On its own, a safety with 2 tackles in two games going on IR is noise. The subtext is that Vrabel bundled it with Woodson's limited status — the two answers were one thought. Pettus (2 tackles, 2 games) was the body that let the team manage Woodson's practice reps.
Woodson is New England's leading tackler in the secondary at 12, ahead of cornerback Charles Woods at 11, with Kevin Byard at 9. If Woodson's limited Wednesday becomes a Friday designation, the room behind him is Jaylen Reed (2 tackles in two games) and Brenden Schooler, a core special-teamer. Byard, in year 11, becomes the only safety with a reliable snap floor — a full-game workload for a player whose team has been cycling him situationally.
The concrete IDP read: watch Thursday and Friday for Woodson. If he's limited again, Byard is a 100% snap bet and Reed is the cheap dart.
Jose Ramirez's promotion is the response, not a reward
"I think Jose Ramirez will go to the 53 today," Vrabel said.
Same-day promotions are rarely about the player. They are about the hole. Pettus to IR opens a spot; two defensive non-participants create the need. Vrabel's later answer about a practice-squad player earning a look at "the 48-man roster" describes a coverage and kickoff-return role specifically — value measured in special-teams tackles, not defensive snaps.
That distinction matters for anyone tracking the linebacker rotation. Robert Spillane (14 tackles) and Christian Elliss (16 tackles, 12 in Week 2 alone) have absorbed nearly everything. Gabe Jacas has 6 tackles, a sack and an interception. Erick Hunter has appeared in one game for one tackle. If the promotion is purely special teams, none of that changes — and that's the read.
The guard spot is a live competition in Week 3
"We'll get a bunch of guys in there... and try to make a decision," Vrabel said, after naming Morgan Moses, Walter Rouse and Ben Brown as options and describing the veteran's game in terms of "tricks of the trade."
An interior line competition in late September is not a sign of health. It matters because Maye has 386 passing yards, 1 touchdown and 4 interceptions through two games — 3 picks in Seattle, 1 more against Pittsburgh. Interior pressure is how that interception total gets built. This is the softest of the four reads, but it's the one that feeds the turnover problem Vrabel spent five minutes elsewhere insisting isn't a problem.
What to watch: Thursday's practice report. If Jones and Woodson are both back to full, this whole piece is a shrug. If they're not, the Ponder snap count and the Byard safety floor are the two numbers that move before the snap.
