New England 20, Pittsburgh 3 is a scoreline that flatters the Steelers. Pittsburgh scored three points at home with a quarterback who threw 39 passes for 187 yards, and the arithmetic is unforgiving: 4.8 yards per attempt, zero touchdowns, one interception, four sacks for 43 lost yards, a 20.7 QBR and a 60.5 passer rating. Aaron Rodgers fumbled twice and lost one. The run game was fine. The passing game was the entire problem.
Start with what worked. Jaylen Warren carried 11 times for 43 yards, Rico Dowdle 7 for 22, Travis Homer 2 for 16. That is a functioning ground game, and it bought Pittsburgh nothing. What killed them is what the passing attack looked like when it actually had to move the chains. DK Metcalf drew nine targets and turned them into 27 yards. Roman Wilson caught five for 28. Germie Bernard caught four for 35 on eight targets. Pat Freiermuth caught four for 32. The longest completion of the day was a 26-yard gain to Warren, a running back. Mason Rudolph got one attempt and did not complete it.
So Pittsburgh's most explosive play was a checkdown, and its No. 1 receiver averaged three yards a target. Rodgers at 4.8 yards an attempt with 43 sack yards tacked on top means the Steelers spent the afternoon behind the sticks, throwing short on purpose and still not gaining enough to stay on schedule. That is not a bad Sunday. That is an offense with no vertical answer.
New England's listed leaders tell you how little it needed. Drake Maye through the air, then Maye again, TreVeyon Henderson, Rhamondre Stevenson and Corey Kiner on the ground. Four rushers, one of them the quarterback. That is a committee built to shorten games and avoid risk, and against a team that cannot throw, it is more than enough. The Patriots didn't win this game so much as decline to lose it.
Pittsburgh's defense had individual days worth noting. Payton Wilson posted six tackles, four solo, one tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. Derrick Harmon logged eight tackles, only one of them solo, which is a lot of arriving at the pile after someone else made the play. The score stayed at 20 because New England never pushed. It wasn't because the Steelers stopped anything.
The two plays that close this out are punts, and that is the point. With 3:33 left, Mitchell Wishnowsky punted 46 yards to the Pittsburgh 17, returned four yards to the 21. Down 17, the Steelers took over at their own 21 and the next recorded snap of consequence is Cameron Johnston punting 51 yards to the New England 20, fair caught by Marcus Jones with 2:09 on the clock. That is a two-minute possession that went nowhere and a game that was over before the whistle. The final horn at 0:00 just confirmed it.
Both teams sit at 1-1. Only one of those records is doing any work. My read: Pittsburgh's 1-1 is the emptiest in the league. A run game that functions behind a quarterback averaging under five yards an attempt isn't a formula that survives a real defense, and the Steelers just lost by 17 to a team that never opened the playbook.
