The season opener carried all the classic trap elements: a cross-country flight, an unfamiliar stadium, a supposedly lesser opponent. Miami treated them as irrelevant. The Canes put up 45 and limited Stanford to six, closing out a 39-point rout without any apparent difficulty.
The natural response is to wave it off because Stanford is not what it once was. That misses the point. Week 1 road games have sunk plenty of favorites. Teams that overlook travel or start slow find themselves in a dogfight by the fourth quarter. Miami never gave Stanford a glimmer.
This is what a focused team looks like. The margin of victory, not just the victory itself, separates a solid squad from one with genuine ambitions. Miami's defense smothered the Cardinal. The offense did whatever it wanted. Coaches will find film-room faults because that is their job, but the performance said more about the Hurricanes' ceiling than Stanford's floor.
Never underestimate what it means to open a season this cleanly on the road. The Hurricanes will face better teams. They won't find many tougher logistical tests than this one. They passed their first check with flying colors.
Doubt Miami because of the schedule if you must. I'm counting the travel as a strength. This team showed it can win anywhere, and that matters more than the name on the opponent's jersey.
