Start him. But know exactly what you're starting.
The headline calls Matthew Stafford a low-end QB1 even on short rest. Fine. I'll take the verdict. The reasoning underneath it is where I get nervous.
An average depth of throw above 8.5 yards is not a floor. It's a bet. Every week Stafford is asking his arm to do the thing that pays off in a spike week and busts in a dud — and short rest is precisely when a deep-shot offense gets thinned out. Less install time, fewer reps to sync with route runners, a game plan that leans on what already works. Philadelphia is not the stop sign, and I agree with that. The Eagles aren't the reason to sit him.
The architecture is.
Here's the doomer read hiding inside a good stat: a 40-yard completion in all three games.
That looks like a floor. It isn't. Three straight weeks of a 40-plus chunk is a heater, and heaters are the most seductive stat in fantasy football — consistency on the stat sheet, variance in the probability model. If one of those deep balls lands a yard out of bounds in Week 4, Stafford still has the same aDOT, the same aggression, the same play caller, and a QB2 line. You'd be paying for the outcome, not the process. That's the risk.
Now the bullish half, and it's real: his alpha receiver has missed two of those three games. Stafford hit the 40-yard mark in every one anyway. The deep shots aren't a two-man operation. The scheme generates them and Stafford throws them regardless of who is running — a quarterback trait, not a receiver trait, and traits travel.
So: start him. In a one-QB league he's a low-end QB1, which still beats everything likely sitting on your wire. In superflex this isn't a question. Don't reach for him in a trade and don't bench him for a streamer with a prettier matchup. The roots are stable even when the fruit is volatile.
What changes my mind: if the alpha receiver sits again and the deep shots stop being schemed — if the aDOT visibly flattens — the case evaporates. The only thing separating Stafford from the streaming pack is that he keeps throwing it downfield. Watch the first two drives for that, not the final score.
