NFL Week 7 Roundup: Mahomes Is Clean, Kenneth Walker III Is Expensive, and Baltimore Is Tired of the Conversation
Patrick Mahomes practiced Thursday with no limitations, a day after a full Wednesday. That is the least dramatic sentence in the NFL this week and the most important one for the Kansas City Chiefs. Two clean practices back to back means Kansas City installs a full Week 7 game plan instead of a trimmed one, and the Chiefs get their quarterback's entire menu at the line of scrimmage. I expect no designation on the final injury report. The only thing that changes my mind is a Friday setback, and nothing in the week so far points that way.
Kansas City's other advantage came from Seattle's decision-making. The Seahawks let Kenneth Walker III leave, their run game is struggling, and Walker is on a historic pace for the Chiefs this season as the reigning Super Bowl MVP. Those are not two stories. They are one story told from opposite ends of the same transaction. My read: Seattle treated the position as replaceable and the position disagreed. The Chiefs now have a floor on offense they did not have a year ago, and I expect Walker's role to keep expanding as the weather turns and Kansas City wants to shorten games. The thing that would prove me wrong is a defense loading the box and daring Mahomes to throw it 40 times a week. Nobody has done that successfully yet.
In Baltimore, Marlon Humphrey went public with his displeasure over what he called "slander" against Lamar Jackson. A cornerback volunteering that defense is a locker-room tell, not a media story. Players only address a narrative that has already reached the building. My read is that the criticism is not about mechanics or numbers, it is about results, and the fastest way to end it is for Jackson to make it irrelevant on Sunday. The Week 7 guide lists Bengals at Ravens, which is exactly the kind of game that settles this argument without anyone having to say another word about it.
The rest of the slate is the usual Week 7 sprawl: the guide covers 13 more games, including Cowboys at Eagles and the Steelers and Saints meeting in Paris. The Paris game is the one I care about for reasons that have nothing to do with scheme. International trips reward the operation, not the roster, and I will take the staff that treats it as a business trip over the one that treats it as a reward every time. If you want a tiebreaker beyond talent this week, that is the one I would use.
Which brings the roundup to its actual point. Kansas City enters Week 7 with its quarterback fully available and its backfield producing at a rate Seattle cannot match. There are no open questions on the Chiefs' side of the ledger, only maintenance. Baltimore has the inverse problem: a healthy roster and a narrative that will not clear until the scoreboard does it. I will take the club with the boring week.
