Joe Milton threw two first-half touchdown passes Saturday, strengthening his case for the Dallas Cowboys' backup quarterback job in a 34-13 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer acknowledged the progress. He didn't declare a winner.
"There's still work to be done," Schottenheimer said.
That measured tone has defined the Cowboys' summer. Schottenheimer praised Milton's work ethic during OTAs and later explained the heavy workload as an evaluation process: "We need to find out about Joe Milton."
Saturday gave the coach more to review. Milton's two scoring passes in the opening half gave Dallas control early. The Cardinals never caught up.
Milton's performance mattered because the backup job is the most competitive roster question on the team. The starting spot is locked. The No. 2 role is genuinely open, and Milton is making a direct claim.
One preseason game doesn't decide anything. But Milton is doing what a challenger has to do: take the reps, produce, and leave no doubt in the coach's mind.
Schottenheimer's public caution is understandable. He's not going to crown a backup in August. But the evidence is piling up. Milton is playing like the answer.
The job should be his to lose now. If he puts together another half like this next week, the Cowboys may not have a choice.
