Jayden Daniels was carted off the field Sunday against the Cowboys after dislocating his left elbow on the final play of the first half. Washington ruled him out for the game. No timeline has been given.
The detail that matters more than the diagnosis: it's the same left elbow, per the AP report. A dislocation on an elbow with prior history is not a clean-slate injury, and it's the reason the Commanders should ignore whatever timeline leaks out this week and build their own.
Marcus Mariota's relief line reads 11-of-16 for 111 yards, one touchdown, no interceptions, a 109.1 passer rating. Stefon Diggs caught five for 47 yards and two scores, one from each quarterback. Terry McLaurin saw nine targets and caught two of them for 50 yards.
By Monday morning the consensus will be that Washington's season is over. Two things undercut that.
First, Mariota was efficient, not lucky. A 109.1 rating with no turnovers is the difference between a lost month and a lost year, and it's why the Commanders can afford to be patient rather than shopping for a quarterback who doesn't know the offense.
Second, the offense Daniels left behind was never a high-volume passing attack. He threw for 96 yards on 17 attempts before the injury, and he'd already run seven times for 69 yards, 9.9 a carry. Washington's offense ran through his legs as much as his arm. An elbow injury doesn't take just the throw. It takes the follow-through, the off-platform stuff, the part that makes him different from Mariota.
That's the real cost, and it's why the box score matters less than the medical file.
My read: the Commanders hold him multiple weeks at minimum, Mariota starts, and the backfield absorbs the load. Rachaad White went 7 for 43, Jacory Croskey-Merritt 12 for 43. That's a functional run game behind a quarterback who won't turn it over.
If Washington lets urgency overrule the same-elbow detail, they will be answering for it in November. The prudent call here is also the correct one. Sit him.
