Commanders open as road underdogs at Dallas, and the box score argues against laying the points
Washington opens Week 2 as a road underdog at Dallas. The NFC East instinct is always the same: take the home team and give the points. Look at the Dallas box score attached to this matchup first.
Dak Prescott went 22-of-34 for 175 yards. That's 5.1 yards per attempt, two touchdowns, one interception, an 84.8 passer rating. Two touchdowns cover a lot of sins in a final score. A 5.1 YPA does not travel. Throwing 34 times and gaining under six yards a pop means the downfield stuff was either taken away or not being called.
The run game didn't bail him out. Javonte Williams carried 12 times for 41 yards, 3.4 a carry. He salvaged the afternoon as a receiver: 5 catches on 5 targets for 31 yards and a score. CeeDee Lamb turned 8 targets into 5 catches for 44 yards and a touchdown. George Pickens saw 6 targets and produced 28 yards. That is a passing game running through short-area volume even for its No. 1.
Then there's KaVontae Turpin, five kick returns for 122 yards. Field position is doing work the offense isn't.
Flip to defense. Donovan Ezeiruaku posted 10 tackles with half a sack and two quarterback hits. Jalen Thompson had 9 tackles. DaRon Bland 8. Caleb Downs 8 with a sack. When safeties and corners are stacking tackle totals like that, somebody was cleaning up after opposing drives that kept moving.
None of this says Washington wins. It says the number matters, and it says Dallas's profile is narrower than its reputation.
If the Cowboys open at a touchdown or more, I'm on Washington plus the points, with a small moneyline look as a separate piece. If it's 3 or 3.5, the divisional-familiarity argument cuts both ways and I'd pass rather than force a side. Home favorites of a field goal or less in division games are usually priced correctly, and pretending otherwise is how you donate.
What beats me: Dallas pushing the ball downfield. If Prescott's attempts jump to 9 or 10 yards a pop and Williams gets to 4.5 a carry, the capped-offense thesis dies and the Cowboys cover comfortably. That's the result I'm betting against, and I'd know inside two series.
The market can price the rivalry. It can't price 34 attempts for 175 yards.
