Dart, the Giants' second-year first-round pick, went down on the opening drive of Monday night's game against the Rams. He was listed questionable to return with a knee injury. The detail that set off alarms: he clutched his lead leg, which for a quarterback is the plant leg, the one that absorbs everything.
Within the hour, sports doctors were reading the broadcast tape out loud. Dr. Evan Jeffries wrote that based on the mechanism, "the worry would be: MCL of left knee, possible meniscus," and that ACL would need to be ruled out. Jeff Mueller, PT, DPT, went further, posting that there's a chance it's a multi-ligament injury.
Read those again. Both are conditional. Jeffries says "the worry would be." Mueller says "there's a chance." That is what responsible remote analysis sounds like, and it's also why it cannot carry the next two days of Giants discourse. A mechanism-based guess tells you which structures are at risk. Imaging tells you which ones are torn. New York won't have the second thing until the swelling comes down.
Here's what isn't speculative. There is no cushion behind Dart on this roster. He's in the second year of a first-round rookie deal, the cheapest starting quarterback labor in the sport, and whatever competitive window the front office has been selling is built on those four years. An MCL sprain costs weeks. An ACL costs this season and part of the next. Identical play, completely different franchise math.
There's a coaching question nobody will enjoy. Reporting on the sequence has the Giants' possession stalling on that first drive, with the offense left on the field rather than punting. Whatever the fourth-down logic was, it put the most valuable asset in the building behind five linemen for one more snap. That decision gets reviewed regardless of what the MRI shows.
My read: plan for multiple games without him. The Giants can absorb a bad September. They cannot absorb a bad September that bleeds into a lost 2027.
