DeVonta Smith is the Eagles' No. 1 receiver now. The promotion came with eight targets, six catches, 65 yards, a 30-yard long and zero touchdowns.
That's the whole shape of it. ESPN's framing calls him "undisputed," and the missing man does make it so: with A.J. Brown gone in the offseason, there was no one left to argue. But "undisputed WR1" and "productive WR1" are different claims, and the box score from Monday night keeps them apart. Jalen Hurts threw 25 times for 153 yards with no passing touchdowns and a 41.2 QBR. Smith was 65 of those 153. That's more than 40% of the entire passing offense, which is exactly what a real WR1 looks like in a bad passing week.
The room behind him is the tell. Dontayvion Wicks caught 2 of 5 targets for 32 yards. Makai Lemon caught 3 of 4 for 29. Saquon Barkley's one catch lost two yards. When people say Smith has always seen himself as a WR1 and everyone else is "just catching up," the honest version is that the depth chart never challenged him. He didn't take the job. He outlasted the competition for it. Those are different kinds of proof, and only one of them gets tested in January.
Here's what the offense actually is right now. Barkley carried 15 times for 82 yards at 5.5 a pop. Hurts ran four times for 25, including a 20-yard touchdown. The Eagles win on the ground and on their quarterback's legs, and the passing game functions as a complement. Smith at 10.8 yards per catch is a chain-mover in that structure, not a separator who punishes coverage over the top. That's a role, and it's valuable. It's not what the WR1 label usually promises.
The perseverance angle is real, and I won't knock it. He was the go-to guy in the moments that mattered, and he has believed this about himself longer than the outside world has. Fine. But belief doesn't hand out targets. Opportunity does.
My verdict: Smith is legitimately Philadelphia's top receiver and would be on most rosters. The number I'll be watching is that 40% share of the passing offense. If the Eagles keep throwing for 153 yards a game, Smith will spend the season as a WR1 in title and a possession receiver in practice, and the "undisputed" tag will keep borrowing credibility from an empty depth chart instead of earning it.
