Broncos 30, Rams 26: One Flag, One Erased Interception, One Denver Win
A pass interference penalty wiped out an interception and turned Denver's final drive into a game-winning touchdown. That's how the Broncos beat the Rams 30-26 on Sunday Night Football, and it's the play everyone will argue about all week.
Richard Sherman was among the loudest voices reacting to the call, according to Pro Football Network, which extended Denver's drive and set up the score. The win is the Broncos' second of the season. Both teams entered the night 1-1, so Denver leaves 2-1 and Los Angeles drops to 1-2.
Now the part the flag obscures.
Matthew Stafford threw 55 passes against the Broncos, completing 30 for 390 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. He took four sacks and finished with a 74.1 passer rating. Davante Adams caught 7 of 13 targets for 137 yards. Konata Mumpfield turned 8 targets into 4 catches, 93 yards and a touchdown, including a 48-yard long. Tyler Higbee caught 8 passes for 62 yards and a score. Kyren Williams carried 15 times for 88 yards and added 6 catches for 70 more.
That is a functioning offense that lost a football game. Los Angeles moved the ball on most of its 55 dropbacks and still needed the final minutes to matter, because two interceptions and four sacks do more damage to a scoring margin than any one officiating decision.
So what does the call actually change? Denver gets a win it needed, in a season where the Broncos have now doubled their victory total from one week ago. The Rams get a loss they'd have avoided if the pick had stood, and a week of questions about whether the flag was correct. Both things can be true at once, and neither team gets to pick which one carries into Week 4.
My stance, and I'll take the hit if it ages badly: the flag decided the drive, not the game. Los Angeles lost this one the other way, with two Stafford interceptions, four sacks, and 30 completions on 55 attempts. A team throwing that often at a 74.1 rating isn't controlling anything, no matter what the officials do. Sherman can be as loud as he wants about the penalty. The stat line is just as loud, and nobody is going to replay it.
