Rams vs Broncos Week 3 Preview: Odds, Prediction, Pick
Two teams reach Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday night with identical 1-1 records and almost nothing else in common.
Denver's is the stranger 1-1. The Broncos have been outscored by 14 points across two games. They lost at Kansas City 10-31, then beat Jacksonville 20-13 in a game that looked more like a wrestling match than a track meet. Thirty points scored, 44 allowed. That is not the profile of a .500 team, and it is exactly why Denver is catching points at home.
Los Angeles is the steadier 1-1 on paper. The Rams lost their opener to San Francisco 7-27 and answered with a 28-6 win over the Giants. Thirty-five points for, 33 against, a plus-two differential. Two games, two extremes.
Which Rams team shows up is the whole bet.
The line: Los Angeles Rams -2.5, total 45.5, moneyline Denver Broncos +114 / Los Angeles Rams -135 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Sep 21). Our published projection is Los Angeles Rams 24, Denver Broncos 22, with Denver +2.5 as the best bet and the Under 45.5 alongside it. The card accepts that the side and the total can split. I do too.
Here's the case for the home dog.
The Jacksonville game is the more recent and more telling one for Denver's defense. Thirteen points allowed, and an offense that never had to do anything heroic to win. Kansas City is Kansas City, and a road trip to Arrowhead in Week 1 is the least representative data point either team has produced. The Broncos have since shown they can play a slow, physical game and sit on it.
Los Angeles has already produced a seven-point afternoon. San Francisco took that offense apart in Week 1 and the Rams never found a counter. If Denver's front can generate anything close to that pressure, the +2.5 stops being a hedge and starts being a bargain. Empower Field in primetime, with the altitude and a home crowd that has waited all offseason for a night like this, tilts a small number further.
The deciding matchup is that Denver defense against a Rams offense that has been either very good or entirely absent. There is no middle setting so far. Denver does not need to win that matchup outright. It needs to keep it close enough that a two-point cushion matters in the fourth quarter.
Now the honest risk, and it's the same one the projection carries. Denver's offense scored 10 at Kansas City and 20 against Jacksonville. If it repeats the Kansas City afternoon, nothing the defense does will save the +2.5, and a Rams team that hung 28 on the Giants will happily trade points until the clock runs out. Our own call has Los Angeles winning the game. We are betting against that result holding by more than a field goal, not against the Rams.
The Under 45.5 rests on the same read: that Denver turns this into a low-possession, ground-and-pound evening and dares the Rams to stay patient for sixty minutes. That is the version of this game the Broncos want. It is also the version they have already shown they can play.
I'll take Denver +2.5. A team with a losing point differential getting points at home is not a contradiction, it's a market that watched the same Kansas City tape everyone else did and overcorrected. The single thing most likely to break it is a Denver offense stuck in the teens again. If that happens, the defense can hold Jacksonville to 13 all it wants and the number still won't cash.
