A Winless Team, a Ten-Point Spread, and Four Losses That Weren't Beatings
The market has already closed the book on this one. Dallas Cowboys -535 on the moneyline, Tampa Bay Buccaneers +400, Cowboys -10 with the total at 47.5 (odds via ESPN, captured Mon Oct 5). Our read calls it the widest spread on the slate, and at that price the result is treated as a formality: a winless team walking into AT&T Stadium on a Thursday night.
Go look at the four losses.
Week 1: lost at Cincinnati Bengals 27-33. Week 2: lost vs Cleveland Browns 19-23. Week 3: lost vs Minnesota Vikings 16-23. Week 4: lost vs Green Bay Packers 14-17. Tampa Bay is 0-4 with 76 points for, 96 against, a minus-20 differential, and none of those four is a beating. Every one is a one-score game. This isn't a team getting run out of buildings. It's a team losing the last five minutes, which is a different problem and a far cheaper one to fix.
That's the whole case for Buccaneers +10. Not that Tampa is good. That Tampa has been within a possession in every game it has played, and the number we're being asked to lay is the widest on the board.
Dallas's own file argues the same thing. The Cowboys are 2-2 with 122 points for and 112 against, plus-10. Their results: lost at New York Giants 20-28, won vs Washington Commanders 37-20, lost vs Baltimore Ravens 31-34, won at Houston Texans 34-30. That Washington game is the outlier. The rest of Dallas's season has been decided by a single score, and the Cowboys have been exactly as close to 0-4 as they are to 4-0.
The matchup that decides this is Dallas's red-zone offense against a Tampa Bay defense that has kept every opponent in the teens and twenties. The reference box score we hold shows where Dallas's points come from. Prescott: 32 of 45 for 335 yards, one passing touchdown, no interceptions, sacked three times. Javonte Williams: 19 carries, three rushing touchdowns. CeeDee Lamb: 21 targets, 17 catches, 189 yards, one score. Forty-five attempts for one passing touchdown is a lot of work for not much finish. If Dallas is grinding long drives that end in field goals against a Tampa team that has allowed 96 points in four games, the ten gets uncomfortable before the fourth quarter.
Tampa's problem is the other side of the ball. The Buccaneers have scored 27, 19, 16 and 14. They don't need to be good on offense Thursday. They need one scoring drive in the second half and no turnovers.
What breaks our position: a short-field sequence. Every projection for a double-digit underdog assumes the underdog makes the favorite drive the length of the field. Tampa has let leads slip late in this young season. Hand Dallas the ball twice inside the fifty and the cushion evaporates, because Prescott with Lamb on 21 targets will punish a tired defense.
Our call, from Monday: Tampa Bay Buccaneers +10 is the best bet, and the +400 moneyline is the lottery ticket attached to it. Projected score: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19, Dallas Cowboys 29. Total: under 47.5.
The market sees a settled result at -535. I see a 2-2 team laying the widest number on the slate to an opponent that hasn't lost a game by more than one score. One of us is wrong about how close this is, and it isn't the side getting ten points.
