Cowboys-Ravens Isn't Pass vs. Run. It's Whether Dallas Ever Gets the Ball Back.
The marquee matchup for Cowboys-Ravens is Dallas' passing game against Baltimore's running game. That's the billing, not the lever.
Both teams arrive in Rio de Janeiro at 1-1 for the Week 3 meeting at Maracanã Stadium, and Baltimore's blueprint is already public. Ravens Wire laid out six keys to a Baltimore win and put the ground game first, because everything else the Ravens want flows from it: favorable down-and-distance for Lamar Jackson, a live play-action game, a pass rush that has to think before it rushes. The less obvious payoff is the one Dallas can't recover. Every sustained Baltimore drive is a Cowboys possession deleted.
So the question isn't whether Dallas can outscore Baltimore through the air. It's whether the Cowboys can run the ball well enough to stay on the field at all. Cowboys Wire asked this week exactly that: where will the Cowboys' run game come from against the Ravens? No answer means third-and-long, means Baltimore's front pinning its ears back, means the passing game everyone keeps praising gets fewer snaps on worse downs. A strength only counts if it gets to play.
The other half of the arithmetic is Dallas' defensive front, which Yahoo framed as needing its best game of the season. That's the honest ask. The Cowboys don't have to shut down the Ravens' run game. They have to force a couple of early-down stops, because the game script only works for Dallas if Baltimore's drives end in punts rather than in four minutes of clock burned.
Everybody's treating this as strength vs. strength, and whoever wins that head-to-head takes it. I don't buy it. Dallas' passing game is the prettier strength. Baltimore's is the one that decides who's holding the ball last, and the Ravens are built to hold it. Give me Baltimore, and give me the Cowboys' rushing attempt total as the number that actually matters Sunday.
