The Dallas Cowboys released their Wednesday injury report to open Week 3, and Yahoo Sports summed it up in a word: hamstrung. Both teams.
That's the news. It's also the least predictive document the NFL produces each week, and the panic it generates is proportional to how little it actually says.
Wednesday reports are participation estimates filed before a week's real work gets done. Players who sit out Wednesday practice fully on Friday all the time. The designation that decides a Sunday uniform is Friday's, when questionable and doubtful land and coaches have to commit publicly. Reading the first report of the week as a status update is a habit, not analysis.
What this report does tell us is broad but real: neither side is entering this one at full strength. That's an input for both staffs, even before the names get attached.
Dallas has already been paying that tax. The team's official site confirmed Malik Davis was placed on injured reserve after hip surgery earlier this month, and Cowboys defensive leaders spent Week 2 talking about a sense of urgency. A roster absorbing attrition in September doesn't need a Wednesday filing to look thin.
Here's the part I'd push back on: the assumption that hamstrung on Wednesday means compromised on Sunday. It usually doesn't. Week 3 is early enough that most of these bodies heal, and light early-week practice loads are how NFL training staffs operate, not a signal of doom. Teams get hurt in Week 3 when their lists grow between Thursday and Saturday, not when the Wednesday page looks crowded.
So treat the report as a floor, not a forecast. The one thing worth watching is whether the same names that show up midweek are still there at the end of it, because that's the difference between a team managing a bruise and a team losing a starter.
My read, and I'll own it: the Cowboys' Week 3 availability problem is real but smaller than this report implies. Judge Dallas on the inactives sheet released shortly before kickoff, not on a midweek filing. If the Cowboys look shorthanded Sunday, the reason will be visible in who's standing on the sideline in street clothes, not in what got published on Wednesday.
