Cowboys, Brevyn Spann-Ford agree to three-year extension
Brevyn Spann-Ford is not the Cowboys' starting tight end. As of Thursday he has more long-term job security than most backups in the league will ever see.
Dallas agreed to terms with Spann-Ford on a three-year extension, per his agent, Mike McCartney. That's the whole transaction. No terms beyond the length were reported, and the confirmation came from the player's representation rather than the team.
The timing is the part worth a second look. The deal lands 11 days after Dallas made 39 roster moves to trim to 53. A backup tight end signing a three-year extension in early September, the week the season opens, is not a transaction the Cowboys had to make right now. They made it anyway.
Here's the case against caring: teams extend depth players constantly, backups get multi-year deals that never get discussed again, and a three-year commitment to a No. 2 tight end doesn't move a win total. All true. The consensus on this story will be a shrug, and the shrug isn't unreasonable.
The evidence at hand doesn't let me tell you what Spann-Ford does on the field, because nothing in this report says. What the length does tell you is directional. Three years is a commitment to the floor of a position room, and teams generally prefer to lock in a known backup in September rather than bid on an unknown third tight end in March. That the agent announced it before the club did is the tell on how both sides feel about it.
My read, and I'll own it: this is a floor-setting move, not a ceiling play, and the Cowboys got it done cheaply because nobody else was going to bid on a backup tight end. If Spann-Ford is still the No. 2 in three years, Dallas overpaid in snaps, not dollars. If he's pushed the starter by then, this becomes one of the quieter wins of the offseason.
Either way, the next contract Dallas hands out at tight end is the one that will actually set the price. This one just set the baseline.
