The Dallas Cowboys just made their offensive line a bigger story than their quarterback.

Starting left guard Tyler Smith was placed on injured reserve, and he will undergo surgery on his thumb. Multiple reports put his recovery timeline at four to six weeks. That's a month or more without the player who was supposed to anchor the left side of Dallas' interior.

The IR move isn't surprising. If Smith is having surgery, he can't play. The surprise is how quickly the Cowboys lose a guy who, for all the attention paid to skill positions, matters on every snap. Guards don't make many highlight reels. They do make the difference between a clean pocket and a hit on the thrower. Smith's absence lands directly on whoever steps in at left guard.

Publicly, the Cowboys will say they have options. In practice, they're now testing their depth at one of the least forgiving positions in football. A replacement who struggles run-blocking changes the play-calling. A replacement who struggles in pass protection changes the quarterback's life.

What the next month reveals is whether the Cowboys built a line that can lose a starter or a line that only works with its first five healthy. The timing matters, too. Four to six weeks is not a one-game patch. It's enough time for Dallas to fall behind in the division race or for a backup to play himself into a long-term job.

The thumb will heal. The hole in the lineup won't close itself. Until Smith returns, every Cowboys protection adjustment, every short-yardage call, and every third-down sack is a test of whether Dallas actually has a contingency plan. They're about to find out.
