The Dallas Cowboys thumped the Arizona Cardinals 34-13 on Saturday night at State Farm Stadium. The score says blowout. The roster says something more useful: the Cowboys' depth chart is sharper than it was a week ago.

Neither team leaned on its starters. Dallas kept its first-stringers mostly on the sideline, which turned this second preseason game into an open audition for the bottom half of the roster. With extended reps going to backups, the coaching staff got what it needed: a live, game-speed look at the players fighting for spots.

The Cardinals were on the wrong end of a decisive score, and that's fine for a club in evaluation mode. Arizona's focus isn't the final number. It's sorting out who belongs on the 53-man roster when cuts arrive.

For Dallas, the win itself is irrelevant. The clarity is the point. A 21-point preseason victory over a team that also treated it as a dress rehearsal tells you more about depth than about the starting 22. The Cowboys now have concrete evidence on which reserves can play, which ones can't, and which ones are just numbers on a depth chart.

This is exactly what the third preseason game will build on. Expect starters to get more run next week, and expect the roster battles to sharpen as the regular season approaches.

My take: The Cowboys won 34-13, but the real story is that they leave Arizona with a more defined roster board. That's a bigger win than the scoreboard shows.
